Campfire and smoker not working?

I haven't really had the need for a smoker because I haven't had any rain for a long time before the latest patch, but now I am running into a problem crafting it.
The normal smoker require a campfire, fair enough I build a campfire which btw seems to want twice as many stones as the recipe says, first big stone added makes the blueprint flicker and the second stone added in the same place finish that part, so 24 stones required instead of 12, but the main problem is that once the campfire is finished I cannot add the smoker, it does snap into place over the campfire but won't let me place it, however right next to the campfire the smoker blueprint lights white no matter how many things are in the way, any solutions?

Below is a screenshot from the elevator where I have tried 2 times, I have also tried at 2 other bases and I cannot complete it.

It just lights red and says that a campfire is required.

I don't think that Smoker (Grill) can be put over campfire or stone ring. Only Small Fire.

Build the smoker first then see if what you can add.

You're right guys it seems to only work with a small fire although it specifically says that it requires a campfire, quite confusing

you can build bamboo smoker over campfire, normal smoker only over small fire

I have a non-bamboo smoker over a campfire.

The only thing you can't put under the smoker is the stone ring.

Campfire is crap anyway. Small fire is much better.

Sometimes when you build a stone ring for a campfire it actually gets placed twice, just cancel one and you can build it with the normal amount of stones.
Smokers of any kind do not allow a campfire with stone ring, just a normal campfire.

i found it to be bugged, you can place fire under but can't add sticks to build fire.

I have put the stone ring under the bamboo smoker twice - but the campfire did not work when i finally managed to find a spot where i could build both of them. May just be that it was not accurately placed or something??? When it did not work (campfire), i had not created either of them before i put up the "plans" for making them - but i did it the same way the last time i built it with the regular stone ring (which worked).

Tried again, and after some trying and failing (i saved before i placed the last of the big stones, in case it did not work), i found a place where all items could be placed on its own (the regular fire, the bamboo smoker, and both the stone ring and the campfire).

I built the bamboo smoker first, and after this, i could place either the stone ring or the campfire under it. I chose the campfire - but it got "downgraded" to a regular stone ring after it burnt out... Just as well, because it (currently) has 1 more slot for the meat, and the regular fire burns long enough to smoke 4 steaks anyway, and i dont need more than that when i have others that are cooked on the fire.
