Is there an actual use difference between the axe and the pickaxe?

No not really, I just use the stone axe or obsidian axe to mine the ore.
Maybe there will if and when mining gold?
I find the level of my skills in each effects the wear and tear so to speak

why not? it's a common thing when you lost the way, instead try to back home you can build your mud city and your mud castle with 150 room, bridges, roards, start a minerary activity, maybe in the next we can melt titanium or mining uranium for build a nuclear power plant!
