What is up with fishing?
A couple off issues here, firstly, has anyone successfully caught a fish with the fishing rod. I stood on the bank of the Anaconda island and fished from there. I have both a hook on my rod and maggots on the hook. I cast the line out and the fish just swim up to it, ignore it and swim away. Doesn't matter how long I try.

The second issue is with spear fishing. How do you do it? I have caught 6-7 fish by throwing my 4 pronged spear at them but then I noticed in my stats that none of the fishes caught count towards my Spear Fishing total. What am I doing wrong?

I have only caught fish with the orange mushroom, guess they like the colour :)
You have o be quick when it strikes or you loose the bait.

Every fish need the right bait, if you want cap something in Anaconda island use red mushrooms, maggots are good for pirana

Bait-
Maggots: Piranha Discus, Angelfish.
Larva: Piranha, Peacock Bass
Discus/Angelfish: Piranha, Arowana
Orange Cup Mushroom: Arowana, Peacock Bass.

Anyway i prefer use the bow for fishing

Well I am trying to get my stats up to see how they affect the game but I cannot figure out which method you have to use to improve spear fishing.r

Try spear fishing in shallow water, jab with the spear instead of throwing it.

It is funny that the picture in your survival book shows a guy with a piranha on a spear for the spear fishing picture. I say it is funny because piranhas are the worst fish to try and catch with a spear. The moment you are deep enough in the water to spear them, they go straight for your legs. And they are fast little buggers.

Those are good tips. Thanks!
I haven't caught anything with a fishing rod, but the spear works pretty good and the bow is essentially the best. Feathers are very plentiful and small sticks even more so, so the loss of the occasional arrow isn't a big deal. Plus the bow exp is more useful.

The bow fishing is a bit unrealistic. Even bullets are pretty much useless once they hit water surface. It only works if you are deploying underwater because surface tension is a barrier.

Bow fishing is a real thing though. Bullets are different because they lose more kinetic energy to liquid environments than subsonic arrows. At least as I understand it; I'm not a physicist by any means.

That being said here's the wiki article on bow fishing. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bowfishing

Bamboo spear works the best for me and very easy to craft.

So on Anaconda Island its been reported over time some places dont work for fishing. You should be aware of that. Try another location. I have had some luck fishing right next to where the log that leads there is. Check your baits. Maggots do work but they dont work for everything.

Try going over the log up to the frog cage trap then walking straight to your right to the waters edge just before the falls DONT GO IN THE WATER gator is on the opposite shore.
But there are discus fish there. Try your bait there.

Angel fish are the left of the cage trap just past the big rock.
Parahnaa are at the bottom of the falls that lead into the big pond behind Anaconda Island
Try the different bait combos Virago posted.

Happy Fishing!

Also I will tell you that once your Skinning skill hits about 40 you get 2 Armadillo shells instead of just one.

I did not realize that. Cool.

As for the fishing, now I know what bait to use I have caught lots of fish. One detail of that bait list is not correct though. Piranha fish will ignore maggots. Maggots are only useful to catch Angelfish and Discus fish but you can use all the fish you catch with maggots as bait for the Piranha fish.

Something you all might not know is that maggots are excellent bass bait.
Go down to the far end of the shorline by fishing village near the caiman theres a ton of bass put maggots on your rod and sit back and rake in the skill points ;)
