I posted a request for this as well. Good see I'm not alone.
First, he should only do that when something really goes wrong, and second, there should be a bit of (random) variation in what he calls out. It must not always be intelligible words, murmuring or grumbling could also do the trick.
I have my doubts about swearing. In the presence of others I have that (mostly) well under control, although I have to admit that when I unintentionally hit my thumb with a hammer the exclamation is out before my consciousness can intervene ;-)
But I agree that such behavior should not be overly encouraged.
That's not the point. When curse words are added for the sake of cursing, it becomes silly. Are you into star trek at all? In all of the older star trek shows, you'd be hard pressed to find them cursing, if at all. And if they do it's mild.
Here enters new generation star trek, namely star trek discovery and star trek: Picard. Both in comparison included a lot of swearing. In places where it's absolutely not needed and in SOME cases, even break immersion in the world they built.
This has nothing to do with not being able to handle curse words. It's about the fact that when they're used for the sake of making your game/show edgy and what not, it feels out of place and as a result, takes away from the experience.
I find it quite realistic, I doubt you would be filled with optimism and politically correct thoughts stranded in the rain forest. It does not come across at all as being added simply for the sake of being in there to be "edgy", but that opinion and my own are highly subjective.
The simplest solution is to just not play the game if you've taken an umberage with curse words.
Also... Star Trek after Voyager is nothing but trash, and it's not because of swearing.
Look, people swear *a lot*. They do without reason, for comedy purposes or to underline something or just because they're vulgar.
HOWEVER, a situation where you're in a JUNGLE where everything wants to KILL YOU is DEFINITELY not "for the sake of cursing". I can't imagine that hero, when he's not really the bravest human alive, being either quiet or saying "oh no!". He's alone in a jungle he doesn't know almost at all. He can swear. And when he talks to Mia, he almost never does so... That's very realistic. And it's nowhere near star trek when it comes to the setting.
What kind of nutter wouldn't swear at least sometimes, especially in a situation like this?
You're lucky it's not what I'd be saying.. ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ piece of ♥♥♥♥ ♥♥♥♥ of a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ spear ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ broke and cut my ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ palm ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ holy ♥♥♥♥
I wasn't comparing setting, I was comparing the fact they added in needless swearing for the sake of it. Not just that, he constantly says the same thing over and over again. I don't mind cursing if it's setting appropriate, but it's quite clearly just added in for the sake of it and very badly at that.
Also I disagree. Only human beings whose vocabulary is limited and can't think of anything else to say, swear a lot. I'm pretty sure there's even evidence of people with a lower IQ swearing much more in comparison because their vocabulary is simply more limited.
Thats some pretty based logic you've got there. If you've already made up your mind then why even attempt to start a discussion?
YOU are the one deciding they put in cursing for the sole sake to be edgy, and that puts you in a very vocal minority. Does that make you right?
No.
