Took me a lot of trial and error as well, before i fingered it out
They're actually giving you the solution right from the very beginning in the tutorial (reading about the poison dart frog on the pinboard). You just don't know how to use this information correctly yet.
I really liked the way they hinted the solution, and even that they're giving you false hints like the guabana etc. Not to obvious, but easy enough to find when you think about what has happened since you started your journey.
The frog was one of my first guesses, because it's something more special for the region and their natives. But it took me a while to figure out that it has to be alive...
Yup, I tried with a dead one at first and that didn't worked. In the text about the frogs and the children it's also mentioned, that the natives use living frogs. I guess that's the point: If it can't poison you anymore, there isn't enough poison left on the skin to make a cure...
Timing was important though so many found out by being curious.
Pickup green or red frog take 2 pain killers, try and catch it close as to the camp where you drop the frog specimen in.
Your skin will start to sweat even after taking pills. Sleep and drink water fixes that.
You can also use tobacco (lowers the effect of the venom, brew or bandage) and painkillers (or anything else that lowers the feaver).
Btw. the frog stays alive and doesn't poison you further while sitting in your backpack. I catched mine at the dock, so I travelled quite a while with the little one.
