Dried meat that instantly spoils?
I had a bunch of meat that had dried on my drying rack. I ate a piece right off the rack, and it was fine. But I noticed that when I picked up two other pieces, they instantly turned spoiled when they hit my inventory. Is this a bug?

And why does dried meat spoil anyway? Seems like dried meat should be able to last for weeks, no? Isn't that the benefit of the cost of waiting so long for it to dry?

I think this is because of new decay timers .
Even before the Story mode update I had several traps with capybura hanging there off the rope.
I left them there for a day and when I went to cut them down and harvest them their meat immediately spoilt.
Also applies to the dryer.
So the timers starts from the moment we harvest .
Open the backpack and hold mouse over the meat should show day/s left till spoils.

Decay Timer— Many items in the game will now start to wither and decay. Players will have to be vigilant learning to use their items before they expire.
Could also be bugged

I leave it on the rack 3 or 4 days and then eat straight up donot place in backpack.

There's a bug with loading games and timers too.

Yeah, when I loaded the game again, the rest of the meat on the rack was spoiled too. I dried more meat and cooked some. Cooked meat will last over one day. Dried meat will last over four days. It's fair. And it gives dried meat greater value.

You left it on the rack too long and it spoiled, same as if you picked it up immediately after it finished drying and were holding it in your bag. It must be a bug that it shows as unspoiled and remains directly edible basically forever if you leave it there, as I can't imagine they intended it to be that way. Nice little trick for keeping a store of food, though, if you don't mind exploiting it.

Build one of your own. The one at the village is bugged.

So basically it's a bit of an exploit. If you directly eat the meat that's been hanging for a long while rather than add it to your bag you'll get all the nutrition but if u pick it up it will spoil instantly. Basically you can build a dryer in all your "base camps" and stock it with peccary meat. Whenever you come back to any camp you'll have meat to eat. Just don't grab it.

It seems to be random actually. Sometimes the one you build works fine but there's no guarantee.

Something I do, but don't tell the Devs, is let the meat burn.

Then you can keep it forever. You just have less nutrition and a small bit off sanity loss.

But standing close to a campfire neutralizes the negative effects.

You get no energy boost either and yet it weighs just as an edible one. Not a good strategy in my opinion especially if you plan to keep it in your backpack.

Energy is rarely an issue for me because I always sleep the night.

What he said. This also goes for the Bamboo smokers. Till they get them fixed my advice dont use prebuilt smoker or drying rack. In the past I never had issues with the drying rack but bamboo smoker has almost always had some bad results. They are working on it.

I was drying 3 meats on the rack. And just 10 minutes later in game time, all were spoiled.
When I went back to the rack, that is; ten minutes later. All spoiled. They could had spoiled minutes before that.

I don't use drying racks anymore for meat. Not worth it. Probably a bug.

When the meat on the dryer is dried there is no counter showing decay timer so if its left on the dryer it will keep so long as you eat it straight from the dryer,as soon as you place into the backpack the timer kicks in so if meat left n dryer exceeds 2 days it will instantly go get those green mold spots and be spoilt instantly :)

A bug for sure then.

But that trick helps Jaunitta. Thanks.
I will use it. Better that wasting meat.

With my dried meat... I swear it was only hanging for 10 minutes max; which is less than a day. Just less than a day. And all my meat went to spoil once I took it off the rack.
