Why is German keyboard an issue?

I checked the controls before playing (under "OPERATION GUIDE") and thought i would need 'shift', 'z', and 'x' to play the game. That would have been an issue because the german layout basically has y and z flipped (and another symbol key between shift and y).
Then I quit because I wasn't in the mood to change my layout yet and I didn't want to do finger acrobatics to play the game.

But now that I'm playing it seems like 'z' does the same as 'space'?

Yes, you can use space instead of Z and Esc instead of X. You can also just change your keyboard mode.
