Monster Sanctuary

Can someone explain to me why so many “monster” taming/raising/breeding games don't give us access to anything that's actually monstrous (or even just threatening)?
I get the Pokemon influence, but come on, it can't be THAT all-encompassing can it?

Aside from SMT (and possibly this, it's not quite clear from just the trailers) I don't know a single game of this type that I could play and not feel embarrassed. (and hence I can't play any)

It's a nice gameplay type, but unfortunately most of those games stick to childish themes. And I'm well past the age where I could feel comfortable summoning an excessively cute kitten to lull my enemies into sleep (cus killing is a no-no) with it's overly adorable purring.

It's also a big contradiction. While I can understand an idea of an imaginary world where danger looks cute to US, it can't look cute to it's inhabitants. Why do you think an animal with long fangs and claws look threatening to us? Because we know that those fangs and claws are dangerous. If there's a world where fluffy tails shoot lightning those fluffy tails should inspire fear first and foremost, not adoration.

In a world there human seeking lethal force would sooner acquire a pet then a gun such pets can't be treated as anything less then weapons. It's ok-ish for kids to think otherwise, but not for adults.

A more cute-ish style kinda fits more natural to such a game concept of collecting monsters. Althought I would say our monsters are a bit more mature (many are based on some mythological creatures) - they are still rather on the cute-ish side overall.

I agree it would be an interesting idea to see a monster collecting game with rather monstrous creatures. I think Siralim maybe goes into that direction: https://store.steampowered.com/app/841770/Siralim_3/

You could just not comment if you don't like the style. Style's a matter of taste, so you not liking it really doesn't make any kind of relevant impact.

Besides, if you 'feel embarrassed' about playing this, you have entirely different issues that you need to work through, and those aren't the game's fault.

I feel like you have a lack of self confidence so you feel as though playing this game will reduce your ego in some way.

Not exactly a strong argument you present there, friend, not gonna lie.

It's not like they remade your favourite grown up game into a kindergarten variant one, they just decided on the game they wanted to make and here it is.

Seems like you are venting about something that is a personal problem. I couldn't really take the setting serious, but the gameplay is awesome, so I didn't really care about the first and now I love it.

If you feel embarressed playing a game, then thats not a fault of the developer but rather yourself.

I'm 31, And can play pokemon without embarrassment
I know many fully grown adults, both male and female who do not suffer from this issue...
I think you got some deep rooted personal issues there buddy. o,,o (For the record i love SMT as well)

As for monster designs, this game having monsterous creatures... it'd be rather out of place given the artstyle of the game. But not all of them are "cutesy" are you seem to be implying. A flying evil eyeball i'd hardly call "cute" and it's one of my favorite monsters(based purely on how it functions. Mad Eye...so good XD)

This is a fun game with a simple, albeit great aesthetic to it. Before you pass judgement, please actually try a game. o/ "Don't judge a book by it's cover" is rather apt.

If I chose games based upon what other people might think of me I would lead a very nonautonomous and unsatisfied life.

Hope OP finds the self esteem to not be ashamed of who they are.

The thing about games about humans kidnapping creatures and making sport out of having them violently murder is that you have to a child friendly tone and try to twist it into "Oh its the power of friendship and nature and people and *insert name for vicious animal with magical powers* working together in harmony" because then its kinda extremely ♥♥♥♥♥♥ up.

Also you sound pathetic and I am not entirely confident that this isn't just bait.

Also also not playing a "childish" game because you are a "big mature adult that is too old for such childish things" is the most utterly childish and immature thing I could possibly think of.

Ah yes, because I, too, play video games when I want people to take me as a serious big time adulty person.

Look at this guy's comment history LOL! To say OP is deeply unsettled with themself and life is an understatement.

Please try to stay civil, everyone. There's really no need to attack the OP personally, they just stated their opinion.

Talk about being misunderstood...

1st - I wasn't “attacking” this game.
Actually wasn't attacking anything AFAIK. Nor was I trying to start an argument.
I was asking a question.
My respect to Sersch for taking the question seriously.
Still don't see why it's a “natural fit” though, but looking at replies I can see how it would be the style most of the target audience would expect.

2nd – A child is not something that I am. Nor am I someone with child-like tastes.
There's nothing for me to “accept” or reject here.
The “embraced” part was a figure of speech, apparently not the most successful one.
What I meant to say is I don't know a single game of this type that has a more mature style.
It's not that I literally can't play any due to embarrassment, it's that I can't stomach their style.

Sorry if that offended any of you.

You could also try with some of the games from Atlus like the Persona series for example, they got more realistical demons and monsters for summoning.
Though they were mostly released for consoles and not PC.

C.S. Louis's quote is good for this topic.
"When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.”

I find that people who throw around the term "childish" and talk about how much of an "adult" they are usually still have quite a bit of maturing to do themselves...

Jade Cocoon had some pretty ♥♥♥♥♥♥' weird looking beasties.

SMT, of course, has demons like Mara.
