Very cool game, I enjoyed finishing it.
The Mexico area is difficult but not impossible, and the puzzles are generally interesting.

Warning: Broken Game!
This game has design/implementation defects that will render this unplayable for many gamers. The game simply does not run on Windows 11 or on PCs with more than 8 CPUs. The developer refuses to fix this glaring defect.

Tomb Raider: Underworld is a 2008 entry in the Tomb Raider franchise about Lara Croft, a wealthy orphan who explores ruins and fights monsters to recover artifacts and save the world. Sure, it's an Indiana Jones ripoff. This probably wouldn't even be a bad game if it worked.

Unethically, the developers have left this on the Steam store in an unplayable and broken state. It's the responsibility of the developer to maintain their product, ensure it runs on all modern PCs, or if they determine there's defects and the game doesn't work, they should remove it from sale instead of misleadingly trying to scam gamers into buying knowingly defective products.

This is harmful to Steam and to gamers, not just because it's a direct and intentional attempt to scam people, but because it takes a share of the marketing space and visibility away from other games. It's polluting Steam and making it harder for gamers to find genuine games and for genuine indie developers who put months or years into making proper games find an audience.

So, should you buy this broken game?

The developer is deliberately and unethically trying to scam gamers into paying them the comically over-optimistic price of $10 USD for a game they know is broken. Don't give it to them.

Tomb Raider: Underwhelming

Underworld is a terrible game. The worst aspects of the LAU trilogy combined into a cacophony of bad game design, inconsistent and buggy controls, technical issues and a lame story.

I beat it in the highest difficulty and gave the game a chance. It didn't retribute in kind.

Gameplay is the worst offender in this sorry excuse of a Tomb Raider game. The magnet grabs and jumping are worse than ever, with neither the accuracy of the auto grabs in the Survivor Trilogy, nor the precision of the classic 1-5 games, it's in that limbo of absolute mediocrity and rage-inducing volatility where Lara is very peculiar and selective as to what ledges she will grab and platforms she will land on without dying, depending on where the camera decides to face and how the buggy the game engine feels that day.

The imprecise gameplay is not aided by the fact that the camera is schizophrenic and sabotages an already bad experience by making certain jumps a leap of faith, sometimes resetting to a more appropriate angle on a reset for some reason.

To add insult to injury, the PC port, particularly on Steam, is a bugfest with the need to reduce mouse sensitivity or use a controller, and limit the game to 60fps or 75fps so the physics don't completely spaz out and make the game unplayable at times. Performance is also poor even on high end machines, with stutters abound.

The good parts? Lara's look and the overall graphics and environments. The levels can be enjoyable but almost all of them include sections that completely ruin the experience in the end, negating the positive impression they might have had in the beginning. The only passable levels in my opinion are Jan Mayen Island, the caves in Croft Manor, Thailand and Mexico until the last part. The rest is either boring as with the swimming levels, or a complete jankfest.

Avoid unless you're a Tomb Raider completionist.
