Tomb Raider Underworld crash on launch

Hey all,

I spent the past few days troubleshooting an issue where my main system wouldn't launch Tomb Raider Underworld. After trying numerous things, I finally found something that worked.

The issue appears to be that the game is unable to address 32 (or more?) CPU cores, which puts the Ryzen 3950x right on the limit. I can get the game to launch if I either turn off CPU cores in BIOS, or if I launch the game with the affinity set to 31 CPU cores (or fewer).

I'm using a command like this to launch the game with the affinity set to 31 CPU cores (The folder may change based on where you have the game installed).

cmd.exe /c cd /d "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Tomb Raider Underworld" && start /affinity 7FFFFFFF tru.exe

Hopefully this helps someone in future.

PC Processor: AMD Ryzen Threadripper 3970X 3.70 GHz. Lara Croft Guardian of Light / Tomb Raider Underworld didn't work for me before but games works for me now with no problems thanks to several friends attempting to help me with lots of fails over time but finally have it working. Downloaded "AMD Ryzen Master." I was hoping it would work in Game Mode alone, but then when I turned Simultaneous Multithreading OFF, this solved the problem and now those two games work along with all my other current steam games just in time to say good bye to Windows 8.1.

I have a 13980HX here, 24 core, 32 thread, and it would not launch at all and taskassign app to assingn just 2 cores to it wouldn't work.
I enabled Win XP Service Pack 3 compatibility mode and it works perfectly on Win 11.
That's ALL you have to do.

Our computers are too powerful! We need a Turbo button again like the old days. (In the old days, the Turbo button would *slow down* the computer if you turned it on, for compatibility purposes.)

I found that if you change the affinity of Steam, the game will launch. Open Task Manager, right click on Steam and choose Set Affinity. Deselect some cores and then TRU will be able to run. There is no way to keep the setting, so everytime Steam is launched, this must be performed.
