How do I haul something onto the boat?

I just started playing the game and I'm on a boat on the open ocean. Can't interact with anything on the boat so I dive down and search for whatever it is I'm supposed to be doing. I found something that looks like a metallic object and I can grab it, so I grab it and try to take it up to the boat with me but I can't get on the boat with it.

Um, as far as I remember you dont haul anything to the boat, those objects should be for unlocking doors underwater

Yeah, you don't use things like that in Tomb Raider at all. The boat is just there because the game didn't want to make you believe that Lara jumped out of a helicopter over the ocean or just sawm over from the coast, so putting a board there seemed more realistic

Tomb Raider is all about finding your way through a level.
