the diversity of the game.
Warrior (Axe) Slow moving projectile, large drop off, slow rate of fire, mediocre damage. Trash class weapon.
Engineer (Plasma Launcher) Slow moving projectile, large drop off, mediocre rate of fire, mediocre damage and aoe. 10x better than the axe but still not that great.
Assassin (Sniper) Fast projectile but not great at range, no drop off, terrible rate of fire, best damage in the game. Good at medium distances but even at long range can be poor. Good if you can aim and getting a headshots basically an instakill.
Hunter (Bow) Slowish projectile that alright at range. Mediocre drop off, slow rate of fire, good damage. Snipers probably better but its a great weapon if you can aim a bow. Worst thing about it is its long draw time.
Now for the Mage...(Staff) Burst Fire. Fast Projectiles, great at range and close distance. No drop off. High rate of fire. Great damage, not as good as sniper but its rate of fire, burst and its skillless aim shreds enemies. If its a fire or frost elemental staff you have the best weapon in the game hands down. If you are a mage. Get the staff asap and there really is no reason to care for a sidearm. Of course with Iceblock and Fireball on top...
