What the purpose of the dog/wolf in the cave?

A little to the right and down from the bunny mural, there is a dog which hidea in it's cave when you come closer. I tried to use all items on it, I tried to get dog ghost to it- nothing works. So it's just part of environment? It's just in the game where everything is part of the puzzle, I just can't believe that dog/wolf there is just for fun.

It's the start of a cryptic lategame secret with a lot of parts. As a hint you have to do something wild and the animal is called Groundhog.

Do something outside of the game to make conditions favorable to a groundhog.

God I ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ hate ♥♥♥♥ like this. Don't make me leave the game to solve a puzzle inside of the game.

Especially don't make a puzzle so reliant on being American. I thought it was a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ gopher.
