If you continue playing the game and uncovering secrets, you will eventually discover why it's there.

There are, but I don't think there are any puzzles directly involving it. No need to waste time trying to figure it out. Its purpose will be revealed once you have done something later on.

It's not directly linked to a puzzle but i'd recommend trying to figure it out on your own anyway. There's some more concrete hints later on too. If you don't want to, it's because the game map itself is on a "donut". It loops back around the top/bottom and side to side, making it mathematically the surface of a torus.

...WHAT? so this 2D world is three dimensional, is that another puzzle?

I see it as a FEZ (and maybe TUNIC) inspired reference since those games like to lay out their ingame universe geometry as part of their lore.
