How is this similar to outer wilds?
The game says it's a cross between metroid and outer wilds.

I completed the game and I didn't find any similarities

Outer Wilds is not an apt comparison to this game, but I understand what people are trying to mean. The connecting line people are trying to draw is that this is an adventure puzzle game of sorts that features some "knowledge-based checkpoints." In Animal Well, that would be hidden functions of several of the items, referencing the massively deep well of optional/post-game secrets this game has, and so on. Stuff that was always there, you just didn't know about it. But Animal Well doesn't really, utilize that design in the same way, or to the same extent as Outer Wilds does. People are simply hungry for more games with any of this branch of design.

A closer comparison would be to games like Tunic, or FEZ as an older example, Void Stranger, etc. Games that hide esoteric puzzles in plain sight which an untrained eye won't notice, that puts trust in a player who wants to dig deeper, and be rewarded for it. Animal Well is far more in that line of games.

I like the name "knowledgevanias" for those games.

its an extreme stretch, it feels like they are disingenuously trying to associate this game with other games that are held in very high regard. i played and beat both games, and i found virtually nothing similar to them. unless you count both having puzzles and limited combat. such weak connections could also be made to dark souls and virtually any other game.

the game author should not have made this claim.

Both games had a lot of hype but were extremely annoying to actually play and I wish I hadn't paid for either of them. That's how they're similar for me.

When people compare a game to Outer Wilds, it's not about a "space adventure game like Outer Wilds."

It's about the knowledge based exploration (as mentioned earlier). When people talk about Outer Wilds, they always recommend that you should go into it blind as figuring out everything by yourself is what everyone enjoyed from that game.
