Flute on mouse+keyboard

I find the whole game quite playable on mouse and keyboard. It's my preferred method and I don't own a controller. The one exception to this is the flute. It's controlled using arrow keys, so hitting diagonal notes is quite hard. You have to hit both buttons at once and the timing is very sensitive. Do you guys have any tricks?

I have two :
-Press the directions, then the item button, then let go of the item button, then press the new direction.
-If you have one, use the numpad instead (5 = item button).

I actually found the keyboard to be more reliable than the analog / dpad for hitting the exact note that I wanted. There's a puzzle that requires a particularly long series of notes and I kept messing up on controller, but was able to get it by switching to WASD. As Perseus said, aim first, then play the note.
