Assassin's Creed Odyssey driver timeout crash with AMD Radeon Software version 21.1.1 and up
hello, please inform me if you're using radeon software version 21.1.1 or newer and are experiencing "driver timeout" sytem wide type crashes in assassin's creed odyssey or origins, as this has been happening to me with these particular versions, however I'm currently trying the new optional 21.5.2 driver and it seems to be stable - I've been able to play for a while and even restarted both games multiple times without a single crash or freeze, so I'm fairly certain AMD has fixed this bug, but I'm still gathering info for personal research, so anything will help.. thanks a lot!

EDIT: 21.5.2 is also affected, and so is every 21.x version, it seems...
I had to install the old 20.12.1 whql version in order for the crashing to disappear

Yes it's a common bug in all recent AMD drivers starting with version 21.3.1, many users with RX580 and RX590 cards are affected. 21.5.2 didn't work for me, I went back to the WHQL driver from December 2020, and that solved it.

I've downgraded to 20.12.1 and I am currently using it with no issues whatsoever, the crashing is gone and everything works without a flaw

Is Ubisoft going to notify AMD for future driver update fix?

I have absolutely no idea, but I took extra care to report every crash that I could AMD and to specify precisely where it had happened, so hopefully they take to fixing this stupid error within the next couple of versions.. while it could make sense for us to be experiencing this in an old game, it is outright inexcusable to expose not one but many modern titles to such a thing

This is strange, because I'm on 21.5.2 on a 580 and I just started playing Odyssey last night with no issue. I played for 3 hours straight without a problem. However, today I try to start it again and first it failed on start up.

I thought maybe it was a Uconnect (or whatever the ♥♥♥♥ they call it now) issue because it asked me to log in again today, but it didn't last night. In fact, it never has for other ubisoft games, I logged in so long ago and hasn't been an issue since

Anyway, I restart, login, its loading and get into the game and it crashed as soon as I start walking around. Strange? I restart again. Same thing. I try lowering graphic settings. Same, crashes again.

What's strange is that it was working completely fine on the first initial start up. But now the next day, it can't even run. Why??? what changed?? nothing!

This is irritating and I might just ask for a refund and go play the Witcher instead lol

Play on Windows 8 compatibility mode, it's the only thing that fixed it for me

indeed! the exact same thing happened to me, FLAWLESS gameplay with no issues for the first few hours, but when you try to play LATER, it crashes...

nevertheless, don't refund the game, just downgrade your driver version to pre-21. as it's still essentially the same thing and it'll allow you to actually play the game
here's the links you need:
https://www.wagnardsoft.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=3480 (official download)
https://www.amd.com/en/support (select your gpu and locate "previous drivers" on the page it takes you to)
I recommend 20.12.1, as that's the one I've been using with no problems whatsoever

Same 21.5.2, running on a RX570. Managed to get 2.5 hours in then crashes within 10 seconds of loading. Gonna restore to old drivers, hopefully that works.

**Edit the 20.12.1 whql version fixes it for me as well. No crashes.

Thank you Sir for this information. I did this as well and the game is now working perfectly after having the EXACT same scenario you had!

yeah, same problem here. For a few hours it was fine but now it crashes quite a bit. Will try the older drivers.
edit: now some of the sounds are gone... I guess I cannot play this game anymore.

yeah, the problem is resolved, but that doesn't mean it's an acceptable solution. imagine being forced to roll back to a 2 year old driver version and missing out on new features just to play a single game

No I installed the driver you recommended. That caused a weird sound problem. Now I have the 21,6,2 again.
