Assassin's Creed Odyssey crashes on launching
I've played AC:O for a few months. Last time I've launched it was a week ago, everything was fine. Just turned on my PC today, it installs two updates automatically on startup - Ubisoft Connect and Razer Central. Nothing else was changed. Now when I launch AC:O, Ubisoft Connect gives a message, that game crashed. I additionally apply all available Win and drivers updates, but result is the same. There was no changes made in PC or software, computer even wasn't turned on for last week. Any ideas? Is it possible that Ubisoft Connect causes game crashes?

To finish this thread - I finally found the reason! After few days game starts crashing again. During troubleshooting I've tried to select another sound output device in Windows and after that game launches! So I simply reinstall current audio driver (integrated audio on Asus ROG STRIX B460-G GAMING board) and now everything works! But still don't understand why this problem so suddenly appear and affects only this game...

Hey, just wanted to say, I had the same problem, my game wasn’t launching because my pagefile was turned off, so maybe check it out. Tell me if that helped or not.

same here. able to play on first day after installing but cannot launch the game now. no other update done including the ubisoft connect because I update it first before installing.

using ryzen 5950X, rtx3090, 32gb ram. so i dont think mine is pc spec issue.
Same Problem here. I upgrade all Programs and Windows, installed the game new and still the problem. Game start and load the savegame but if i try to move the character it crashed :medidynasty_death: so sad, i haven´t play 50% of the story :LIS_poker_face:

I did it again...
I've tried to launch game few days ago (as usual through Steam shortcut), there was short information about some update from Steam (for this particular game) and surprise - game launches normally!!! I've played it last time yesterday, today I launch it and got the same error message again :-E I use this PC only for gaming, not even turn it on for another tasks. No updates was installed and nothing was changed. That's really weird.
Just for info - synchronising achievements with cloud seems to be processed normally, game crashes a bit later. About verifying files - I did it through Steam, everything is OK.
BTW - I've just sent a crash reports for this (five similar ones) so maybe it will help.

I found the answer on another diskussion: AMD driver update was to high. Must downgrade it to the 20.12.01 version and the game works again :LIS_pixel_heart: other AMD user have this problem. Perhaps a information on the Ubisoft support site where helpful for others

Do ya have AMD graphic card? I downgraded the driver to the 20.12.01 version and the game works again

Thanks for providing that information, ArtemisDSilverstone.

Indeed the latest drivers seem to encounter issues with the game, and rolling back seems to be the best workaround in the meantime.

No, nVidia. And it should not be related to drivers as there was no updates installed before game starts crashing (except Ubisoft Connect update). Still try to run game time after time but no luck :(

Cerberus, we have also seen this reported for Nvidia.

So it may be worth trying to rollback the drivers for your card as well.

As per your previous comment about you saying the game had an update. Odyssey has not been updated for Steam since May of 2019. Only thing that would of updated was ubisoft connect, and not the game. I would verify your game files and see if anything needs to be re-acquired. If that doesnt help i listed some things you can try.

Best thing to do is see what other background tasks, programs, and services are running that could be causing conflicts with games. Especially ones that start with windows.. There maybe an issue with Razer software you just updated. Try disabling that. If you not sure how to check these I can explain.

Could also be an issue with Xbox game bar, game mode, and GFE. I would disable all of that as well and see if problem persists.

You can also try to use DDU to clean out your display drivers and install latest one from NVIDIA. Their most recent driver has an update for Odyssey. I would def recommend you run DDU and than install latest display driver.

Here is a link to DDU. It contains a guide on how to use and explains what it is/does.

I understand this and I didn't mentioned about game update. OK, I will explain situation more detailed:
- this is my gaming PC. No other tasks are done on it and no other software used on it. Default antivirus is Microsoft Defender;
- I've played AC:O for a few months (205 hours according Steam info), absolutely no problems encountered so far;
- on THAT day I turned on my PC, Razer Central automatically installed current update (that happens very often). I've launched AC:O (I use Steam shortcut on desktop, not Ubisoft Connect menu), Ubisoft Connect updates too and that's all. Game starts crashing. After that I installed all other available updates for Windows as well latest nVidia driver. No effect. I've verified local game files through Steam, all was OK.
- a few days after that I've tried to launch game again and it starts without problems. No updates was installed during that time. So I normally play it again, totally about 5-6 hours for two days.
- two days later AC starts crashing again. All the same, after successful synchronising savegames with cloud. And it still is to this day. Another Steam games works normally so obviously there are no problems with system or computer hardware.

Anyway I'll try to downgrade nVidia drivers, maybe it helps.

You didnt respond to this so Ill state it again. It could also be an issue with Xbox game bar, game mode, and GFE. I would disable all of that as well and see if problem persists. Do not install geforce experience.

If you want the issue to stop so you have to troubleshoot. Just because things are up to date does not mean it will be 100% as all games are different. Do not load your razer software and see if it helps.

Something is obviously running at certain times that is causing the crashes. If you dont do anything else but game on the computer disable windows defender.

Make sure you didnt install any preview builds for windows. They have had issues with game performance. You should be on 21H1 build 19043.1165.

No reason to downgrade display driver as NVIDIA just released a new update specifically for odyssey to improve performance.

Use DDU to clean out your display drivers and install latest one from NVIDIA. I would def recommend you run DDU and than install latest display driver.

Thanks for tips. So far what I did:
- disabled Xbox game bar;
- disabled Game mode;
- disabled Razer Synapse from StartUp;
- turned off Windows Defender;
- disabled some additional software from StartUp (PowerChute Personal, DELL Display Manager);
- latest updated Win' (21H1 build 19043.1165) and GeForce drivers (471.68).
No effect. I'd like to try to downgrade Ubisoft Connect as it was updated exactly before game starts crashing but AFAIK it is not possible.
OK, I'm giving up. I'll try to launch it time after time, maybe Ubisoft patch something (at least they have a lot of Crash Reports :)
