It's looks like they've all been unique which is impressive.
I've killed 281 in 213 hours.
I did wonder if they stopped at some point but they just keep coming...
The first five or so come really quick then they really slow down to a trickle until you jump to another area then it seems to reset.
All I do is farm them now since there is nothing left to do.
I've got a couple legendary mercs that are beasts during ship boarding events.
Use Ikaros and scope them out before you engage.
You'll see their 'quality' level (Epic, Legendary) and what skills they have.
It's up to you what you want to do.
I don't mind being tracked by a few while i'm running around causing trouble.
It can get hairy when you're attacking a fort and one or two show up though.
Bounty hunters is a good and steady source for epic gears though.
Few months ago I killed all the mercenaries. So as long as I didn't fast travel out they stayed dead. I had level 5 bounty which reduced to zero and I built it back up and still no one came.
The mercenary pool was only refreshed once I fast travelled out and let some in-game days pass.
Yeah, that gets annoying in a hurry. Busy sniping dudes from afar, only to have the *MERC MUSIC* blare, which takes me out of my hidden state. It's fun the first few times, trying to get out of situations like that, but after awhile it becomes too much like Black Friday sales at a shopping mall.
I like getting the individual mercs one at a time, mainly because some of their names are very amusing, and I miss a few if they show up en masse. Such-and-such the Greasy Camel is my favorite so far, because he looked like one. Good thing these games don't come with Smell-o-Vision.
Same here, took a while to understand they were randomly generated and infinite. I only wish that when you kill a certain amount, some kind of non-randomly genrated mercenary boss comes in, or a cyclop.
