Finding and Recruiting Odessa

So I just started playing a few days ago, As I was roaming around and exploring, I came across a woman named Odessa, I freed her and sent her on her way. Later on I finished the Prologue and got my ship. I found out that she is a possible Lt. for your ship, Did I have to recruit her when I saved her or is there a place I can find her at to give her a chance to join?
