It gets easier later as you level up your ship.. but the key is to distance yourself and take down one at a time then board their ship which will give you ship health back.
What this person said. Boarding ships can be the difference between success and failure early on in the game. Be sure to brace whenever an enemy ship fires on you or rams your ship.
And like Arrogant Player said, try to draw one off singly and always board them instead of outright destroying them. The game returns all your ship's health if you play out the boarding process.
This was the only way I could beat that mission. It's not feasible to me to leave and try to significantly upgrade your ship's abilities, when just a change in basic strategy will suffice.
Basic of the game
Fire arrows/javelins cause much more damage. And after few hits the enemy ship is on fire and stops moving for a while.
Also, Never get trapped between two enemies.
2. Assign legendary captain if any and focus on a perk eg fire arrow or ramming only
3. You should attack the ship 1 by 1, your ship should will heal for each ship you sunk
4. Attack red highlighted area of the enemy ship body
5. Alternatively you can swim sneakily to enemy ship and clear all the on boarded troops! And sink all the ships later. I like this since this is assassin way not pirate way
Luckily I had played AC Black Flag many times before playing Odyssey so the naval battles weren't hard for me, I just used the same tactics I had used in Black Flag and they worked just fine. All those tactics have been stated above, take on one ship, board it to get your ship's health back then move on to another.
As a Black Flag veteran this did not work for me. Turns out we had very different set of Black Flag tactics.
Also, ramming in Black Flag isn't very effective before you have the chrged ramming attack, but to have this you need to defeat the 5 Legendaries, so you probably not needing it... still use it for fun. In Odyssey ramming is good right from the start.
Hmm. I never defeated all the Legendaries and I'm sure I remember ramming lots.
The S maneuver allowed to defeat even man'o'war when executed carefully... trying to ram man'o'war will end in disaster every time, I think.
You can still get overwhelmed by multiple ships if you’re not careful, though.
