This game is going to take me a very long time to finish.
That happened to me with the Witcher 3 and I still haven't finished it. (one of these days I'll restart it since I really like what I did play of it.)
Lately I've been trying to pay more attention to the main story and if I still want to play after that, work on the side missions.
I finished nearly all the small islands in the west before going to Athens. Was at like hour 50 or so. Also the minimum level for Athens (all regions really) raises if you also raise in level.
At the end all the regions are 48-50. Thats what the level scaling is for so you can just do what you want without missing out on quest XP later.
Like I said, I enjoyed the combat and story, I just focus too much on side content first. I did the same thing with GTA 5.
My reasoning used to be that if I built up my character with side missions, the main story would be easier. To a degree that's true since you're very comfortable with the controls before you do the really tough battles, but with all the extra stuff they put in games these days it's pretty easy to take it too far.
Now I've started thinking that if the game is good enough that I want to see it all, I can always do it after the main story.
