You can still get this evidence if you tell your pater not to meet Stentor. This will force you to kill Stentor and you will get the clue.
Even if you wouldn't get the evidence, you will still be able to condemn the sage after you'll get to kill him.

Went into the cave and freed some people. Seems I still have to go to that fort and whoop some ass, although at least there's one less merc hunting me.
