Airborne Assassination?
I have not played the AC Games since Black Flag, and I recall the ability to do airborne assassinations (like be climbing, or hovering over a ledge, and look down at an enemy, press a button and it jumps ontop of them and kills them). It was a very fun mechanic.

Is this possible in AC Odyssey? Or any of the newer AC games for that fact?
Maybe through unlocking it?

There was definitely air assassinations but i don't remember if it was tied to an ability.

It's weird, so I was able to do it once while playing today. But I've tried multiple times in the past and have not been able too. Not sure if it's something weird with how it locks on, or the height or something. Idk.

In Odyssey the air assassinations are limited to close range, far more close than in Black Flag. The algorithm changes the needed range as follows:
* The highest range is from above directly over the victim. Still very short compared to Black Flag though, Like 5 meters or so.
* The flatter angle to the victim is, the less range to him. In level with them you need to be very close, like 2 steps away.

Therefor even small height difference works in your favor. Even standing on a low fence doubles your range.

You can do air-assassinations when the target is below you, however, depending on the difficulty level and how far you've upgraded your spear, and your skills, it may not be enough to kill an NPC...

Put another skill point into it and you can double your damage with a long press..

Also, yes, it's weird how you can be above someone and seem to be in range, but it just won't trigger until you get a little closer. Still, it works from a decent distance. But as mentioned, hop up onto something a little higher than your target's level, and you can suddenly air assassinate from quite a distance away down a slope or onto a slightly lower level.

The area of effect that triggers the action is like a squashed sphere, or oblate spheroid. Sorta like the teal colored one in this screenshot, but even that's not entirely accurate..

Doesn't work all the time, especially during day-time even with assassins build. It works on gruns, but leutenants and above sometimes do not die even after "double" assassination.

I would then look toward respeccing my weapons and armor with more Assassin-related bonuses then. I know some can resist an outright kill, but most should not. It should be a rarity rather than a rule.

Well, I don't use additional engravings, maybe that's the case and never upgraded anything. Find better stats gear, put it on...

Engravings make a huge difference. I tend to go for ones that replenish my adrenaline so I can do more cool stabby stuff, but sometimes I have to focus on the Assassin output as well.

On just a regular assassinate kill, I'm doing around 50k damage at level 20. With a crit on a Critical Assassination, it goes way up to around 100k. Not much can withstand that.

Well, after 122 hrs I'm almost at the end of the game (couple of quests lines left that should take me additional 5-10 hours), no point in engraving anything anymore for me. But good to know that engravings would have helped, I mean, 50K damage... wow. I think I deal max 10K.
