Stealth cleanup is possible, but somewhat tedious. Just stalking by is even more so, just as expected tbh. Open assault is usually way more FUN than it's worth, unless you are near max level and really geared up.
Btw, bounty detection is way too raw too. You kill few soldiers, a guy on another end on island magically knows about that. And some mercs know that too. Would make more sense if a soldier in the same fort would become bounty holder, or something like this.
Latter might get hillarious at times: a guard once heard a broken arrow stand, went to investigate, became all rageful and lit a signal fire. I got a bounty for it.
2. Release the wild animals they always have caged in forts.
3. Let the guard see you then run to the other side of the fort, jump over the wall and circle back to the chest.
4. Shoot at a guard or start a fire away from the chest area to lure the guards away.
5. Always booby trap the signal fire before doing anything.
6. If you don't want to kill then knock the guards out and hide the bodies.
7. Most important, always attack at night and pinpoint the location of every guard with the bird.
This is all great advice for stealthing camps and forts. Adding that setting stuff on fire, like using arrows, rallies enemies to the area where you set it on fire. If you use a lit torch, they'll magically congregate to the area from whence you threw it.
Unlike other AC games, day vs night makes a noticeable difference with stealth play. Guards tend to sleep more at night (obviously) but also some patrols change, making it easier to pick off guards in secret. [There are also night-time assassination bonuses with some item perks.]
If you haven't noticed yet, guard AI tends to "fill in the blanks." Take out a guard near a chest or entryway, and within minutes, another guard will arrive to fill in the vacancy. If you find a good stealth takedown spot that doesn't leave a giant body pile,* then you can eliminate nearly all the soldiers in one area without alarm...if you're patient.
*(Beware dry brush or thin shrubs. Enemies can sometimes spot you or your corpses in them.)
Last two-cent contribution: Setting prisoners free can sometimes create a good distraction. The prisoner might not live, but will have every guard chasing them on sight. Sometimes the AI allows them to run out of the camp, taking all pursuers with them. This makes looting a cakewalk.
I hit in the bushes until a hapless guard wandered by, then assassinated him and dropped the corpse at the edge of the pit. Soon, another guard happened by, saw the body and rushed over to investigate. At that point I crept up behind him and kicked him into the almost bottemless pit.
I hid in the bushes, waited for the next guard to notice the original victim, then repeated the process. I managed to eliminate 7 guards before they stopped coming by. At that point I used arrows to attract another bunch to the area. Cleared almost the entire fort that way.
