Be sure to use stealth and range to your advantage, as well as the cover of night, and get comfortable with the parry and dodge mechanics.
Tank and spank doesnt really work in this game
Get the heal in warrior tree asap
A fortress is not easy to take at low level, and certanly not by a frontal attack, rush in the middle and kill everything
Later with good stuff and OP skills, possible, but not before a long time
Use the bird first to put every NPC on radar and hit the weak spot
You are supposed to kill the NPCs 1 by 1, silently if possible (assassination or sniping) and without triggering the alarm which will bring reinforcements and mercs
You can also trap the alarm, so it doesnt work
Move a lot, stay on high ground or bushes, exit the fort and reenter another way, distract NPCs with corpses, fire, liberating animals...
You can also exit the fort, save in yellow zone, and reenter to not lose all progress
For me the single most important skill in the whole game is dodging. You have to avoid getting hit. If you can find one weak enemy, lock on to him and don't attack, practice dodging.
You have to have environmental awareness of who is around you and understand the range of your weapon.
For me the easiest weapons are daggers, except in conquest battles where I use an axe because overpower attacks are so... erm.. overpowered there.
There are weapon combinations that do more damage, but I will just do little slashes and dodge all the time in tough battles. Wear them down gradually and don't let them touch you. Then Hero Strike them when there is an opening (the way I'm specced that's a good attack for me). Sometimes you can stun lock them with daggers, but always be aware when someone is behind you or glows red, and dodge immediately, don't get greedy even if they are at one health.
The heal ability is a must in my opinion. Often it's necessary to dodge till its cooldown ends.
Early in the game I was not paying attention to engravings, but actually they are really important. On the inventory page there is a list of all of them and how to get them.
I also ignored archery for a long time since I was playing in a classic AC stealth style. However you often have time to fire off a shot when in combat. There is aim assist if you are locked on. In some battles, archery is essential.
If things are going badly, take off the lock and run like hell. If you can break line of sight you can hide in the shrubbery and get your health back. Then jump the first guy who gets near and run away again.
I found I was still learning new stuff about combat right the way through. It is worth respeccing and trying different abilities to see how they work.
I had a hard time starting out because I didn't really understand the system, but once I realized how to build up the yellow bars and added healing, the game opened up for me.
an assassin's creed where you can't even assassinate a soldiers in one shot from behind.
I cannot say i applaud these changes, but indeed the AI has improved a lot since AC1, now everybody can play the game immersively.
for polemarch or captains, i have 2 strategy :
First he cannot detect me before i strike him from behind, usually with a fully charged critical assasination, and follow by sparta kick + hero strike if his HP is too long for you.
Second, still i prefer a charged assassination, but jump from a high ground to assassinate him.
