Spear or Sword, whats the main difference?
Hey there guys
I have to confess that I like much more the spear animation, but somehow I do better with the sword. What their main difference? The spear seems to have a bigger reach (which is quite logical) and the sword attacks faster (logical also). But is the spear usable efficiently in endgame even against solo targets?
Have a nice weekend and thanks in advance for your replies :)

speed vs range
pretty much more dps or the safety of keeping a melee enemy at distance .. as long as you dont miss ^^

I prefer anything but the spear. The spear has nice range, but the attacks are so straight-forward that anything can simply move 2 feet to the side and avoid the attacks. Practically all other weapons have horizontal swings, allowing them to hit multiple targets more easily, or hit dodging targets. The spear's moveset mixed with it's medium speed just makes it a liability compared to any other weapon.

All weapon classes are viable, feel free to use whatever you like and dump - whatever you dislike. It is worth trying everything out thoroughly. Remember that all weapons have very different heavy attacks, charged heavy attacks and overpower.

the spear has horizontal swing if you dodge+heavy attack, i like spear , totally worth once you get used to it, and the dodge+ normal attack allow you to jump on ennemy to hit like a spartan style.
the heavy attack allow you to hit mobs from far while they are approching you which is cool.
the only tedious thing is the overpower attack who is bad vs 1 mob as it don't lock like other weapons and as the mob is pushed away after the first hit then all of the others hits don't touch him. the overpower attack is usefull against a group of mob that are packed like 2 meters in front of you but useless when the mobs are around you.
still i prefer spear more fun to play than sword which i find boring. also spear is more efficiency against boars and things like that, in my opinion.
so yes spear worth it. but if switch to swords or daggers when i want to overpower just 1 mob.

I dont really like the spear

Nice range, but slowish, low damage, monotarget (overpower is multi, but mostly hitting air and missing everything...) and i dislike how it makes your character move toward the target

Sword is somewhat balanced, not great at anything, but no weakness
I quite like it

Everything is usable anyway

I swap my weapons very often just for a change as they all play differently...but i prefer great axes, daggers and swords

I always use spear, the overpower is deadly af versus alot of opponents

i think the trick to spear is using lock target
for overpower vs groups tho i would vote hammer, that chain slam is crazy

Spear is pretty much the best underwater weapon for sharks. When you get in fight with sharks you can just mash light attack and you swing a 360 arc and sharks just kill themselves trying to attack you.

Make sense poseidon's trident is spear and all.

Swords and Heavys are better for humans and bigger animals.

Bow of smaller animals.

Never touched staff.

Daggers all the way. Especially if you've invested in adrenaline per hit / 2% damage health restore or crit in general. Daggers are the best for gaining fast adrenaline as well.

I like and use most of them, but prefer spear 1st, then staff, then sword, daggers, heavy/blunt.

Actually, I just got to spear and got about a hundred kills with it. Its main advantage is range - used properly, you can pound your enemies unharmed even if they try to hit you back.
Speaking of another weapons:
- Staffs have decent everything - oomph, range, speed and wide swinging arc, but everything in balance. Charged heavy attack and overpower do not lock onto targets and consist of 360 degree sweeps, which make staffs utterly insane against tight groups of enemies.
- Heavy weapons are so heavy. Low speed(axes a bit less so), but serious damage. Overpower is basically a HULK SMASH one target, and then you can chain it up to three times with rank 3 ability, as long as you have other enemies nearby.
- Daggers are, as expected, have no swinging arc, but exceed at tearing single target to shreds in minimal abount of time.

the overpower for spears is pretty cool. i use the spear alot. i tried swords and they just didnt do it for me. they didnt seem as good as a spear.

I only have ever played on Nightmare difficulty, so until the Leonidas Spear becomes level five, one big hit from an enemy (fire for example) is enough to put you on the defensive for ages until you can recover. That being said, I could only ever use daggers or swords, and sometimes staffs because I needed to be able to hit fast and stack my poison in time to back out and watch for other enemies attacks. Heavy weapons just aren't forgiving, and unless you want to only attack after a parry, don't seem to work well in Nightmare at all. So it comes down to quick agile attacks that you can engage with any second there is an opening, or wait for a parry and hit hard otherwise some minion is going to stun you every time you go for a swing. I personally throw spears into that "heavy" category because they are pretty slow and lack much combo, and if some group surrounds you, you are forced to be uber defensive instead of being able to land a full combo on the entire group. That's my experience with Nightmare at least, probably different if you play on a lower difficulty or just really enjoy parrying everything. I also found it easier to kill the Legendary Beasts with daggers over any other weapon, even if they miss half the time.

I use daggers/swords because it has the best single-target damage for the Overpowered ability. If I'm doing conquest battles I'll switch to a 2-handed weapon as they have the best AoE and their Overpowered ability lets you target up to 3 other enemies just like how Rush Assassinate works and heavy weapons also give you the highest counter-attack damage. The sword/dagger variant keeps the enemy standing up ( after leveling up past 1 ) which makes it easy to combo it with Hero Strike.

I never found a use for spears, the Overpowered animations sometimes miss the enemy and Elites are able to dodge them, plus it doesn't do alotta damage even if all of the attacks can land.

For me personally, Overpowered is what'll make or break a weapon and the spears version is pretty awful. It sucks that spears can't be used with a shield, fighting enemies using that combination actually have some very good AoE and single-target combos.

Agreed to the last point for sure, if you could use a shield with the spear that had a perma block mechanic on all light attacks, that might take the cookie. Dunno why they didn't add this to begin with, considering more than half the NPC's have one. Also, Ubisoft clearly used the work from For Honor and applied a light version in this game, so they know how to put shields in a game.
