Murder for defending myself?
I got attacked by two mercs and a bunch of athenian soldiers who then chased me back into a spartan town. I killed the mercs and I get charged with murder for killing people who attacked me. Is this intended? it seems like a cheap mechanic to force the player into a never ending bounty loop if I get charged for self defense.

If you got attacked by mercs or soldiers then you must have broken the law, and killing soldiers for any reason is a crime as well. If you don't want a bounty just run around a corner and hide.

Yeah, there's always some bounty hunter after you for drachme. They're tough! I always fast travel somewhere else until they give up :-)

What is this "charged with murder" referring to exactly? Something other than guards simply attacking you?

If you mean the bounty meter, thats not really related to "law", it means someone put a bounty on your head because youre too much of a nuisance. This includes killing the previous mercenaries. Yes, its a loop that you can somewhat slink out of by killing bounty sponsors or simply not killing anyone for a while, but its still not about "law" unlike in GTA etc.

Perhaps there is something wrong with the "law", even without bounty. Yesterday a lion spotted me first and downed me from the horse. An Athenian soldier (that I rode past without any trouble seconds before) actually helped me to defeat it. However, after the lion was dead, he immediately proceeded to attack me.
I don't know. Maybe, just maybe I hit him unintentionally while the lion was running around as it's wont to do.
The only other possibility is that soldiers don't care who started first - if a fight ensues, everybody gets it.

If you point a bow at a soldier that is considered hostile. Starting a fire can do it too. It is hard to help them when they are fighting because weapon swings can be quite wide. I try to use arrows from an angle where it's not pointing at them but it doesn't always work. They are supposed to follow the rules, not just attack you for fighting non-bounty enemies like wild animals and bandits and such.

Yes, I had the same reaction for trying to help a citizen from being killed by a boar, then being attacked by those around me, then at a different time things seemed more normal and even a thankyou, I think. Being a good Samaritan by a mercenary isn't wanted,I guess, still it does ruin the immersion factor a bit.

Just stand far away and keep shooting fire arrows lol it causes them to pause a lot when coming after you. they die before they can even hit you.

Its super easy to accidentally hit "allies", and have them turn against you.
