Multiple targets / AoE: spear
The two I use most of the time. Never been fond of these big two handed weapons.
You're right, that is how the game plays.
-It receives all the bonuses that you have for normal hits (crit chance/damage while full health, for instance) and that's probably why it will deal more single target or aoe damage than any other overpower ability in the long run.
-The only overpower (along with spear I think) ability that utilizes * %Damage dealt restored as health* as well.
-Gives you iframes for the whole duration so its as safe as all the others.
-If you like playing with elemental damage, the aoe it does spreads it super fast on multiple enemies.
The only drawback is the knockback, if you wanna use it on a single target, best time would be when they make an unparriable move (or go red) so that they can't be knocked back and receive the whole damage.
2h axe is my second favourite
However, overpower with a mace looks badass.
There is a 'damage' rating post if you look a little bit where the author got the calculator out and did some research on skills/gear which is well done.
I like to run around with the dagger(s) active (ok, dagger in main, spear piece in offhand) and reserve the big boy (a massive spear I found that I really like) for certain situations. So, when I get into fights, I use the overpower of the daggers to take out one target (two, if they're close enough to each other).
If I start getting surrounded, I switch to the long spear so I can push people back from me, and do decent amounts of damage to everyone. You can even direct the line of attack by pushing in a different direction. It never fails that the person I want to hit (some more) either gets knocked back, or they dodge out of range, and I have to do a right (or left) turn and poke, stab, slash into a new opponent. Took me a few fights to realize I didn't have to waste the last 3/4 of an overpower attack with them.
I miss being able to knock the crap outta someone from horseback like in Origins with the larger weapons. I'm lucky to get even most animals down to 80% most times. The damage really stacked up with momentum in Origins. I just dismount in Odyssey and start swinging, because 99% of the time I'm going to get unhorsed in 2 hits from anything that attacks me while on the horse.
Edit: I forgot about the axes' ability to chain attacks mid-fight. I might have to revisit that IF I find an axe I really like. I tend to get hooked on just a single weapon for quite awhile.
Heavy Blades is an overhead swing at your target; note can chain attack multiple
Heavy Blunts is a overhead followed by baseball swing; note can chain attack multiple
Regular Swords is running stab
Dagger is multicombo one target
Staff is helicopter ae swing
Spear is also helicopter ae swing
