Anyway, the "sci-fi stuff" in the AC games wasn't always pointless and ineffective. Originally, that was the main story and the linked the games together. Assassin's Creeds 1 through 3 told a single, pretty good story through the modern day segments; which were much more substantial than the afterthought that is Layla's role in Origins or Odyssey.
Even Black Flag had a pretty interesting/worthwhile modern side to it. Ever since then though, the "sci-fi stuff" has been completely throw away and forgettable.

I'll always say that the Desmond era was the best, not because Desmond was an amazing character and that, but because the modern day sequences were so much interesting than what was happening inside the Animus.
Abstergo obtaining pieces of Eden, the satellite, the training machines, the "End of the world", knowing so much about the Isu and their efforts to try to prevent their extinction. Man, I miss those plots.
