Legendary Animals??
So I just started a few days ago, got that quest in Phokis for the legendary boar - suggested level was 13, tried it at 13 and got messed up real quick. Tried it at 15, no dice. Tried it at 17 with the boar at 15 and still am getting wrecked...

Are these like the war elephants in Origins where it's really only do-able if you're like 5 - 10 levels above them?

Lower the difficulty. They're easily doable at the same level as you if you don't mind putting your ego aside, if only for a single batte.

Just look up some strategies. Treat them like they are boss fights.

For the boar you are going to want to use venom and flame attacks to keep one or the other effect on it at all times. Then it is a matter of learning its attack pattern and learning the best way to deal with the boars it will summon.

Yeah, you must be good man. Though I imagine that fight probably took you 20 minutes since at levels 13, 15, and 17 my upgraded weapons (using flame/poison/explosives too) was only taking off a small fraction of health each hit and my upgraded armor was still having me suffer 1/4 my health bar with each hit from the boar.

I did this at level 19, having just learned the poison skill and applying a poison engraving to increase buildup. Dodging was the key for me, though. [Well, and patience...and lots of running and screaming maybe.]

Dodge towards the boar when he's close (not when he's charging, dodge to the side in that case, hopfully putting a few flaming or poison arrows in his tiny, misaligned hitbox) and you'll get a few seconds to hit him in the backside. The "weak spot" critical yellow damage area is just like the elephant's from Origins. If you're lucky, you'll also get a slow time bonus depending on which way the boar's head is thrashing.

If you have the Spartan kick ability, this can buy you a ew seconds to orient yourself as well.

The hard part is the waves of evil bacon minions. Try to get them out of the way first. More won't spawn until you do enough damage to the Legendary.

The good news is, that after this first beast, all but one of the rest seem like a cakewalk if you're at or under the animal's level. I defeated the giant elk one level below recommended and was shocked at the difference in difficulty.

If you want a much equal footing bring one mercenary chasing you; if you want a walk in the park publicly kill the leader and wait for the 5 mercs to chase you, lead them to the boar and after a few minutes its done grab the hide of the boar and find the nearest bounty officer and kill him or pay off the bounty.

That is really clever! I will try this with The Erymanthian Boar
Using a squad of mercs should even out the odds. Nobody should ever have to die from toxic pig farts

If you are just using base effects with no elements and no specialized gear, then yeah, that is about what I expect. Most of the game can be facerolled with whatever gear you picked up, but if you want to melt the legendary animals (And later bosses) you need to prepare for it. Pick a strategy, gear for it, and execute it.

Some examples:
Elemental strategy, pick either poison or fire (Fire will do it faster, Poison is safer to work with, and gives some defensive help) and gear for it. Find gear that buffs your chosen element, get the skills you need to back it up, and keep the element active on the boar, then just stay out of the way and kill the little boars.

Devastating shot strategy. Max out your hunter damage, bet the legendary bow that buffs devastating shot, get good at headshoting the boar. This is probably the fastest way to put it down.

Hero strike the boar. If you wait awhile and do it around lvl 30 with a decent lvl Leo spear, you can kill that piggy in about 6-7 shots.

go in the little cave, climb onto the little rocks, from there you can shoot arrows without being hit;
coward way.

The first time I tried this boar I kept getting killed due the smaller boards respawning. I respecced into hunter skills and crafted max knock out arrows and knocked the small ones out. Game didn't see them as dead and it gave me peace to take my time to whittle down the big guy. Took about 5 minutes dodging and shooting to kill him then just one shotted the knocked out ones. :)

Nope, dodge and healing skill is all that's needed here, along with a massive dose of patience...

Ha! I cheesed it with this method last night, felt a bit bad but it was driving me nuts!

The fight is not that difficult, the only problematic part is the boar horde that is spawning every now and then - you have to have a good aoe weapon. My had +% damage to animals and with fire buff I killed all the boars with 2 -3 swings. Its important to know the movement pattern of that thing and to know when to stay back and kill the adds.
Srsly people complete darksouls playing with their feet. Stop omplaining about optional boss fight like that one - I was very exited to see something like this in an assassins creed game.
