I still get into many melee frays, but I use the lighter one handed weapons, even though I have plenty of more powerful 2 handed weapons. They are just too slow for my style, so I stick with the best one hand weapons I can get.
An exception are Spears, that I use for hunting animals
(Never use short weapons underwater -.-)
Truly, it's amazing how many playstyles there can be :o
Another perk is the fast attack all adds up to the elemental buildup causing instant ablaze
Bow is the strongest dps hands down not to mention aoe group clear at pointblank which dagger cant do it and is a miss/hit for heavy weapons.
For group, dagger playstyle is the most fun. Due to range, observing enemies swing with parry or shieldbreak invincibility become necessitiy. I cant describe the sense of pride and achievement through chain parry and got getting a single hit when surrounded by 5 or 6 enemies slowly burning and cutting them down.
Worse case scenario, point blank a devastating short then dagger everyone again for the ultimate fun.
I don't think there is a best, is more of a comfort / fit your playstyle & build, and that is good balance for the game.
