The game is the master and your soundcard is the slave in this case. (Yes, this is proper terminology). You have to make sure they are behaving properly.
I'm guessing that the game is at least at 44.1k (cd quality) but it could be in 48k (DVD quality)
Are you using onboard sound? An external source?
For example, let's say your soundcard can only handle 44.1k and the audio that needs to be decoded is 48k. There will be issues and they are trying to compete and not behave correctly (master/slave)
