siding with Sparta or Athens
I'm confused with the situation about picking sides. So if I wanted to side with Sparta and they have control for a particular area, am I suppose to leave their territories alone so I don't weaken their foothold in that territory? or is picking a side purely on the main story line questline?

Do I become "friendly" with them at some point, so they don't attack me when entering their base?

This game is "freedom of choice" gone wild. I had a quest to save the brother of an main storyline NPC. Right after I saved her brother, and got rewarded for it, I was able to assasinate him or knock him out and recuit him to ship my LOL.

The Spartans just screwed me over. I killed a merc for them and they refused to pay. Guy just walks off and disappears, which made me twice as mad because I was going to cut him down right there. So Athens just gained my favor, for now.

indeed.
Booooo. Lame excuse to not make a game more interesting.Would have been more interesting to make choices that changed history/

that is not how assassins creed games work, they change small things like how historical characters die but the time and place they die remains historical if there are sources about it and they do not change hirtorical outcomes.
What bugs me about the spartans is how theyre like a militiry civ but the spartans and athenians could never beat each other

how exactly do you mean this?

historically sparta won the war.

both sparta and athen lost battles against each other during the war, and during other wars/confrontations as well.

you can flip almost each zone back and forth for double the rewards
It's really lame, I don't like being forced to pick one side.
Issue 1: Both sides are infected with cultists, so you could be accidentally helping a cultist by giving one faction control.
Issue 2: Sparta betrayed you, yet your spartan and your mother and "father" give their alliegance to sparta, should we fight for someone who betrayed us?
Issue 3: Athens is the birthplace of democracy, as an american I feel ablidged to help a democracy prevail over whatever sparta is, yet i know from history it falls anyway.

well, happily for you you can not really choose a side and doing stuff/fighting for both sides has no real consequences. :)

Both Sparta and Athens 'betray' you at some point, mostly under the direct influence of the cult. This is why we continue on as a freelance mercenary throughout the entire game.
I personally love the ability to fight both sides as it gives me more targets to hunt down! :)

Welcome to the life of a mercenary (and if the chose a side permanently they wouldn't be a mercenary).

Look, they've failed on this feature.

You don't SIDE with anyone. You CHOOSE to AID either Sparta or Athens.

Which means, yes, if you SUPPORT Sparta and you don't want them to lose any nation power, then you simply don't do the locations on that said area. That is, unfortunately, a major flaw that a company like Ubisoft did not think about.

I, however, still explore them, but don't do any of the objectives, not even killing a soldier of that faction.

You don't become friends, friendly or any of that ♥♥♥♥. You simply have the freedom of choice, NOTHING ELSE.

They really jumped the ball on this.

I completely agree. I want the progression of overcoming the enemy force's strongholds, like the templars or a farcry enemy, and turning the map from theirs to ours. The fact these fights are repeatable and you can fight for both sides means I have no desire to do them at all. What's the point? You're achieving nothing, it's just a grind.
Card well played sir ...

Its not that mercenaries could not work for everyone. They could, sure!!!! But still, any mercenary would have to take care with what they would do and who they would kill. Because....life has consequences.

For instance, if you would kill someone like Nikolaus and be famous because of it, be sure Sparta would be out to KILL YOU!!!! Yeahhh....you would work for them too if they would hire you. Problem is.....Sparta would want NOTHING of it lol Sparta would want you DEAD, PERIOD!

Its like....if someone kills your best friend, you are not going to hire that someone to work for you. That is not how people work. Sorry but its not.

So...yeahh....use that excuse how much you want.

In real life, if you would mess with a big power in any significant way, you better keep your distance from them for the rest of your life. If you ever dared to show up in town....you were not going to have a pleasant time.

Seeing as it can't really be all that hard to make a group of npcs like you more over time and eventually not attack you on sight in their forts + forgive a few crimes + help you in battle...

It's done in every single bethesda game and most other games that have reputation factions, even really old games like Everquest... and UBISOFT are a minted modern company with immensely talented developers....

the obvious answer has to be (no, because) the devs made it this way on purpose. As a design choice.

I was disappointed too. Im not saying it isnt disappointing that u cant do these things but it doesnt appear to have been the company's vision. I saw 300 too. I was into greek style and philosophy before the story of troy was made into a woman's pron by brad pitt. So I wanted to make a Spartan. I dressed like one. even moved like one... but when they attacked me on sight at their camp after i'd just deleted an athenian army for them...?? I was hurt lol. That my bros would do me like this.

Once I realised this I was immersed a bit more tbh. I'm not just a spartan soldier who was trained to fight from birth and known nothing but battle, I'm a street urchin who got thrown off a cliff when he was like 7 years old. I've probably had a long time to think about Spartans and their ways. Maybe I don't like Spartans. Maybe I think their ways suck.

There are a couple of spartans who respect you. There was at least one spartan who didn't want you to get thrown off a cliff. The rest of them all WANNA BE LEONIDAS and think they are the best warriors in the world even though I regularly see the big elite spartans being ripped to shreds by much smaller athenian soldiers 1on1.

So screw sparta. I went over to Athens,l took in the sights, watched the townsfolk. I thought there are a lot of people here. They have a good thing going. Maybe I shouldn't... be helping the spartans turn them all into battle-slaves.

But then I did some quests in Athens and saw that the athenians are a bunch of pompous A holes who lie and get drunk and cheat and corrupt. Petty and non violent crime is rife it is only this glorious place of study and art on the SURFACE as far as depicted in this game....

So SCREW ATHENS TOO.... I started avoiding all the armour that looked like spartan stuff. The other styles, particular the ones pushing toward roman in influence, are usually what i go for these days so my character looks like what he is.

A Demigod With A Lot of Money and no Masters

Spartans are cool yeah, so are Athenians if you look at them in that 300 sequel, but the real greek heroes, the true legends, didn't wear some bright red spartan logo, they didn't zerg and die in the first round of the match like Leonidas did, they didn't have some ridiculous brightly coloured plumage coming out of their heads.

They were neutral coloured. They wore whatever colour clothes or armour that the armour they acquired was by chance. Zeus sends down a blade with a bright green emerald handle. A shield is gifted to Perseus that shimmers like a mirror. Powerful artifacts that are more than just a fanatic drawing a V on his shield and thinking he can stonewall 10 men by himself then dies in a pool of his own
