How do I discover the leader of an area?

I usually just find the "leader icon" on the map, regardless of whether I have weakened the region or not. I guess you simply have to explore the region until the leader icon appears on the map or you find it by chance with the eagle. The leaders will always be accessible at any time, so it's really just an issue of finding them. I find that when the region is well fortified, they are usually inside their mansion, the temple, or somewhere in the city. And they will be outside the city or in a camp when the fortification is lowered.

For myself it just keeps on saying undiscovered leader - cannot seem to find the icon at all :<

If the fortify bar is full they will be in the city. If bar is 2/3 full they will be in a little camp usually near the city and they will have guards. and if the bar is 1/3 full then they will be at the same camp except with no guards.

Not exactly true. The position can be nearly anything, sometimes it's a camp, sometimes it's anything else. The amount of nearby guards lowers when weakening the area. That is the only consistent thing.

Most of the time they're in the capital city along with like 4-5 elite guards

if you have not discovered the leader yet, the elader icon will be rgey, but he will be there on the map where the rgey icon is. after you discoevred him, the icon will become purple.

Thank you for your answers. The most peculiar thing happened to me.

I gave up on a region and attacked Athenian leader in a different one since that one had a GRAY icon of undiscovered leader. After having that region conquered by Spartans the icon in the region I originally was looking for the leader in re-appeared.

Curiously enough that region was conquered by Spartans as well - had no idea that multiple battles happen simultanously and don't have to be triggered by the player!

Can you capture a leader (with unarmed take down) so that they can join your crew? Or they must die to progress?

Use your bird, fly up high with it, yo will see everything. Bird vision is great.

At one point I'd spotted the leader in his house. I infiltrated, and was about 2 levels above him when he and a group of bodyguards left the place together and all walked to a nearby fortress. Had to follow them and start the whole infiltration process all over again.

This is a good question, since some leaders will be cultists, this shouldn't be a surprise and not taken as some spoiler....
