It's possible that the main story will force us siding with some specific side at some specific point (no idea) but in general the devs said that we'll be able to choose who we want to support.
First you clearly don't understand history if you think Athens was the good guy and Sparta was “evil”.
Sparta fought against Athens because of their massive extortion of the rest of Greece with the Delian League. Athena's tried to become an empire and were general bastards to the rest of greece. They threatened killed and extorted their way to power.
Sparta lead the coalition against them to stop all that nonsense.
Now I’m not saying Sparta are the good guys either, they were very clearly not, there was no real clear “good and bad” in ancient greece, everyone fought everyone at one point or another.
Sparta was mortal enemies with Argos that Athens kept allying with and pissing off Sparta.
This game is playing very very heavily off of two works of classic literature. The Iliad and the odyssey, it even has many of the monsters that were told about in greek myth, one easily seen is the medusa that perseus killed.
Sparta was a eugenics based slave run society! for every sparten there were a dozen helots who had to do all the labor and farming to allow the spartan army to exist. They had a system of dual kings because they knew that if at any time there was no leader in the city to oppress the helots, there would be a massive revolt.
Its the main reason that Sparta opposed the persian invasions, cause the persian empire didn't support slavery in their empire. Sparta was literally mocked by Alaxander the great during his conquest of greece when he gave 300 suits of golden armor TO ATHENS. Sparta Sucked dude, there is a reason Athens is a giant city right now and Sparta is a ruin.
I don't even understand how this is a controversial opinion?
You see what i did there?
I have always preferred Athens to Sparta during this specific time period of ancient Greece. Birth of philosophy, the culture, architecture, military innovations, etc. set them apart. They are truly the birthplace of western civilization, although later much of their work would be rediscovered through the Middle Eastern world who kept much of the scrolls/literature of that time. The dark ages was literally a result of losing all of that information and the Renaissance a result of rediscovering it. So, I want to choose Athens.
I'm a few hours into the game and have chosen Athens during battles, but I find I'm still required to reduce Athen's hold on territories. I try to avoid it, but I feel like the game is ultimately forcing me to side with Sparta...
You know the Athenians also kept slaves, right?
Also, during the war featured in the game the Athenians killed every man on the island of Melos and sold all the women and children into slavery because Melos refused to join the budding Athenian empire.
There are plenty more examples of Athenian 'enlightenment' in both their society and the way they waged war, if you're interested.
Democracy does not equal good. They were no better than the Spartans. It was a brutal time.
Modern Sparta is a beautiful town. It's far from a ruin.
Athens is a metropolis and i know because i live there.
Athens was the birthplace of the western civilization.
For centuries Greece and mainly Athens was the shield of the western civilization against impossible odds sometimes.
For some of you that may don't know the desicive battle against the Persians was not the battle of Thermopylae but the naval battle of Salamis where it was basically the Athenian navy of triremes.
Sparta was a military society that except the fact that they had the first true professional army they can't compare to what Athens offered to the rest of the world.
Talking about Democracy Arts Science Philosophy etc.
Let's also not forget Plataea. Salamis wasn't the only decisive battle.
Persian army basically had no way to escape after Salamis.
They were shattered and even Xerxes left after the naval battle of Salamis.
Athenian triremes my friend was the heart and soul of the Greek fleet.
The naval skill of Athenians was way higher than the rest of the Greek city states.
Tis like comparing the British Royal Navy to the Italian one during WW2.
Also don't forget that Themistocles was the mastermind behind all of the strategic desicions and he was definitely Athenian.
