No, I don't think it has more fantasy. The main character with godly skills and abilities is from fantasy tale obviously, but most of the world, the towns, the NPCs, the enemy soldiers, all feel pretty realistic. Just couple of these bosses are added on top of usual enemies.
Although nothing about this game is realistic in the least bit, for a whole multitude of different reasons.
And the super human abilities of your main character is basically because he/she has Isu blood in them and can use certain powers of technological devices like the Spear of Leonidas and such.
So nothing is really mythological in this game, its all explained through technology.
Technology that pretty much borders on magic but still.
From a visual perspective the people of Greece are much much darker than they were in reality. But regardless of all those things this is a good game so far (only played it for 7 hours).
You can play this fine, i only played AC 1+2 in the past ( did not like them much) and then this one was my first AC game since then. Did not feel like i was left in the dark on background story or such, everything you need to know is very clearly spelled out in the game.
I guess i maybe missed out on certain "aha!" moments with characters in the modern day portion but those are so short that it did not bother me.
Anyway regarding what interests the player and thus the gameplay and the loop you are going to interpretate: yes the game abilities are unfortunately MUCH oriented toward sci fi fantasy stuff, and even if you still have a window not to develop super unrealistic things they still represent the majority.
Let's make a "limit" example: when you use the red arrow super power shot, you can use it or not use it. You can also develop it 1/3 2/3 3/3rds, or indeed, not develop it.
If you develop it 3 thirds the enmies will be kicked meters away when killed by such a shot creating a Candy crush atmosphere that i just DETEST in such a game like an AAA and anyway a game that is about assassins not fantasy Monsters and deamons etc...
AC developers were not in the house when making this game, it's made by totally new developers that of course followed new philosphies and concepts...
It's a pity that the "realistic" or Historical fiction lover does not really find place here. It's more a cartoon, not really a mature story.
The fantasy concept you mean is actually Mythology, and it mixes kinda "well" with the political story you will live and be a part of \ actor of. The nexus between the Mythological part and the political part of the story is actually not well designed. It's more like "it's a journey, and in a journey you find obstacles"... there is not really a nexus between the story and the various beasts but very very simply made connections and speeches if not none.
There are very realistic parts in the game though..
Especially when the game finally allows you to wear the 25% max Health bar and allows your blade not to be wooden\ plastic (non carved) ones which is instead for the entire game until you get the right items\armors\engravings.
The game can become real but when it does so (for me) it's too late. To reduce this delay, just hunt for the Engravings first as much as you can the ones that go towards your playstyle.
Ubisoft wishful thinking put players in front of NG+ like we would have taken it due to "rage" of not feeling fulfilled during the first play through, instead to give us the best FIRST RUN experience ever.
The DLCs are in terms of gameplay not really giving anything new.
The Blade one is war connected and u will do similar quests to the ones already done.
The other DLC gives a lot of new level design (world u move in) but it's generally very mythology oriented you are like a super hero there (ALL IN ALL).
The free Quest "dlc" in the game Lost tales, are good at least half of them is not bad at all (realistic topics all of them).
Then you played all of them, you already know what AC is about and you should even consider yourself a fan. Story (past and present) adds very little to the lore in Unity, Rogue and Syndicate.
It *is* the latest game in the modern timeline, and the game doesn't have any intros to explain who e.g. Layla Hassan and her team are, IIRC. Not that it matters much. There are some gameplay sections in the modern setting, but what you have to do tends to be pretty unambiguous and does not require knowledge from any other AC game.
In this case, fantasy refers to elements like magic and monsters. The contrasting theme to sci-fi.
