(Edit/addition)
Aside from that, there are various abilities that are unblockable attacks that also give you invulnerability frames, and certain situations that will do similiar things (like killing a captain in a conquest battle grants you invulnerability during it, so it can also be timed as a defensive measure).
No, you are not right. Combat in Odyssey is extremely fluid and nothing whatsoever like Witcher 3's abysmal, clunky, unwieldy, awkward, unresponsive combat.
This Odyssey game's great combat is like the antithesis of Witcher 3's terrible combat.
And no, Odyssey's combat is not about just spamming attacks either. You have to do all sorts of things like choose when to dodge, when to overpower the enemy, when to parry, when to switch targets, when to switch weapons, when to use your bow and fight from a distance, when to go hide in the bushes and/or ocean, when to outright run away, when to flee on your horse, etc.
When you successfully parry, then the enemy becomes staggered, which leaves them open to your next attack(s). Hence, that sequence of events is functionally equivalent to a block + counter-attack combo.
Similarly, a lot of times when you dodge, then time freezes (i.e like in Max Payne games' Bullet-time mode) which leaves the enemy open to you repositioning yourself and counter-attacking a bunch of times. So that's functionally equivalent to a dodge + counter-attack combo.
Moreover, Odyssey also features overpower abilities which require adrenaline, and some of which perform an automatic combo of blows if you successfully hit the first blow onto the enemy.
Yes, whole game is very much like Witcher 3. Just like in W3 you can play whole game with dodge only, attacking enemy from sides/behind after dodge. Just like in W3 you also have access to Abilities that can be activated and are stupidly strong.
But, there is no real reason to actually engage in constant melee brawls in Odyssey. Nearly every situation can be solved by assassinating enemies 1 by 1 from stealth until they are all dead and nobody even noticed you were there. There are couple forced unskippable story battles you have to do tho, just like you must do few naval battles.
You can also play the game as ranged character using bow and arrows, this is specially strong against bosses who will instantly kill you at melee range. Just keep the distance and shoot.
Now each of the damage types (warrior, assassin, hunter) has their own unlockable abilities and bonuses. While leveling up you probably want to pick only one of the trees and ignore others until you have finished upgrading your main abilities. I think you are able to finish one tree within 20 levels so by level 60 you should have everything unlocked.
I like to mainly use Staff and use a heavy attack as my follow up to parries, as it hits in a big area around you and sends all the foes near you that it hits flying away, giving you a big breather. I play on max difficulty and highest level foes.
Perfectly timed dodges give you a few seconds of slow time effect, also great for adjusting position and getting some cheap hits in.. I like to use it to build meters back up.
I recently learned that this supposedly historically set game has "spartan women warriors", which is basically the same degree of silliness as watching someone survive a nuke by hiding inside a refrigerator. XD It is just too silly for me.
I mean no offense to anyone who likes that sort of thing. It is obvious why they did it, but I'm not obsessed with gender representation when it comes to entertainment. I'm not obsessed with realism or accuracy either, but ♥♥♥♥, something that obvious is too silly for me to get past.
Thanks for all the answers. Sorry I was asking the wrong question.
There's no SJW sort of stuff in the game. They simply put 2 characters into the game the one being a female. I recently finished the game with the female character and it was a blast. In fact, the female protagonist is far better in my opinion. You seriously shouldn't pass on this because of something like this. The combat is pretty varied and a lot of fun as well. It's a full-blown RPG now (if you like that kind of stuff)
I'm with this guy. I played Kassandra and it was excellent, and I think Alexios is awesome and the voice actor did an amazing job (especially as a bad guy, which I am most used to seeing I guess), but no offense to anyone, when I spend 200 hours staring at a character's rear end, I like it to be a rear end I find attractive. also, Kassandra is all kinds of awesome and strong and womanly, my kind of woman, in fact. Which would make sense, since I'm the one playing her so naturally I agree with most of her choices, lol.
