Could work if you can clear whole fort with it. Never actually tried myself.
Or, if you don't want to be noticed AT ALL, you can wait for the pet to wander off. You don't have to kill every living thing.

Nah. You can definitely assassinate animals. I haven't tried to kill any world animals but have killed companion animals.
I'm just going to guess, but i think the stealth upgrade makes it possible. It seemed impossible at first and stopped trying. Sometime after getting the stealth upgrade, a random opportunity occurred where I was walking along a rope (in a fort) above a dog following a soldier. Saw the assassination bar come up and went for it.
There's still a difference between humans and animals, though. The assassination hit box appears to be different for each. Animal hit box seems to be a bit smaller.
