any unbiased thoughts on AC Odyssey
I'm trying on liking this game, seen some several videos and such but none of it interests me besides the spartan armor theme but i don't wanna pass on something that i never knew would be good.

I'm mostly a fan of jrpg action games and some sony exclusives or western games ( God of war, nier automata, final fantasy 15 and say Shadow of War atleast. ) Combat may be bad for some, but combat gameplay on gsmes that i have mentioned felt crispy and has an impact whenever you hit an enemy.

But this game feels like it doesn't ( maybe i'm wrong ) it felt seriously floaty and had some similarities on the past AC game i played ( Syndicate ) and considering that i literally got bored on it and just rushed through the campaign felt like if i ever picked this up i'll also have the same feel.

It may have the vast open world sure, rpg mechanics and such. But i still would prefer a linear game with a good and engaging combat system than a open world game that feels wrong and feels unrewarding.

If i would ask if does it compete with Nier Automata, DMC 5 or other platinum games type of game or Western Games such as Shadow of War or Batman Arkham Knight. How does it feel?

Out of those, I've only played Shadow of War, and I'd say that Odyssey is much more vast. There's a lot of side missions, and even more if you check the message boards for missions and bounties.

The combat is a lot like Origins if you've played, with some additional features. In addition to parrying, dodging etc, there's slow-mo if you dodge with the right timing and there are extra moves you unlock with skill points, such as the following:

A "This is Sparta!" kick (which is endlessly fun) , a move that let's you relieve people of their shield. Overpower attacks (basically just a special attack with your respective weapon) is back from Origins as well.

The overall combat pretty much goes parry, slash slash slash, dodge roll, repeat. You use special abilities mentioned above when you can, but that's the just of it.

The ship combat is alright, but not as good as Black Flag, and definitely not the main feature.

Ultimately, the game feels pretty rewarding to me with the choices you can make during missions, and in general. Personally it's been an 8/10 so far.

Yep, it's a solid 8 out of 10. It's fun, main story is fairly interesting with a balanced mix of tragedy and comedy, combat offers more possibilities than Origins, characters are fine with some notably exceptions, and there's a lot to do between main campaign, side quests, activities and dlcs. But compared to Origins one cannot deny that Odyssey is overall less detailed. Origins has a ton of small but nice details, you can feel the love, the commitment and all the research the developers put in the game. Odyssey feels less... cared.

True. Admittedly most of the urban landscape is largely recycled. Still, there are some things that stand out.
I'm thoroughly enjoying it. Skipped origins, last AC was black flag. It feels like they've 'borrowed' a lot of components from the Witcher 3 in terms of a more sophisticated looting system (reminds me of AC3 but is more streamlined and easily manageable) as well as it having more RPG elements (although some of these are still rudimentary). Overall I'm very pleased with my purchase and am enjoying it as a little pre-return to university gift for myself.

I'd give it 8 out of 10. I'm level 22 right now and around 23 or 24 hours in. Enjoying it thoroughly, especially as I recently studied ancient Greece, so sparring with Socrates is very entertaining for me! :)

Best regards and I hope this helps to inform your decision.
Wise.

It's much more approachable and less oppressive than shadow of war, with a shallower loot system and meh skills (cool, but incredibly cheesy and OP), but with a HUGE and more interesting world, naval combat, and surprisingly decent story. The result is a much more chill game where you truly can do whatever at your own pace. It's not perfect, but it is worth 30 bucks, easy.

Combat's far from perfect, but it feels solid and while immensely exploitable, it's way better than past ascreed games imo.
bought it out of the blue.

not an huge AC fanboi, only slighty

fell in love with this game the first second it started.

and it got better.

I think it's actually TOO big. I'm Level 36 after almost 50 hours and there's no end in sight. If you want a gigantic world that can completely consume your gaming hours, AC Odyssey is perfect.

But those who just want to zip through the single-player story before moving on to something else will be disappointed; you HAVE to do side-quests. Not just to level up, but to unlock some progression with the enemy cult that you fight throughout the game. I was enjoying it up to about the 40th hour, but now I just want it to be over.

Nier and Gow? I see you are a fellow individual of fine culture. Huzzah.

Yeah. It does get monotonous after awhile. Haven't played that many AC so not sure how well it compares. The ancient greek theme does it for me.

It may have the vast open world sure, rpg mechanics and such. But i still would prefer a linear game with a good and engaging combat system than a open world game that feels wrong and feels unrewarding.

Agree and disagree here. I prefer a linear-ish experience for rpgs in some respects. I like character progression and powers to be linear and NOT like RNG MMO grinds. The way GoW plays is quite nice. You focus on story, complete objectives and simply progress. However, I do enjoy open world games quite a bit. As long as you stay away from the store, Odyssey does a fairly decent job with loot/progression. You have a couple places that have gear set troves that fit a particular theme. You pretty much decide on a build and stick with it via upgrades.

However, you can definitely get bored with this game if you don't set some goals for yourself.

I don't think it competes with Nier, but it definitely competes with shadow of war and such. After all, the game feels like an amalgam of Far Cry, Shadow of War, KoA, and a couple others I can't think of at the moment.

For the content it offers, it's at least worth the buy when on sale (which I did).

To each his or her own. I can't stop playing this game. 100% and now a few hours into my second honest playthrough with a modded main character and it is still the tits. Blows FFXV out of the water imo, and although it is similar to the Shadow of Mordor/War games, the visual impact of Odyssey is soooo much more effective.

This game is as far removed from Syndicate as it could get and still be called AC... Fact is it's almost not even an AC game at all aside from in name.. The core gameplay mechanics have been nearly completely overhauled..

The game is massive in scale, if you're a J-rpg fan, that might not appeal to you.. it's not linear at all. in fact it's pretty much as open as you can possibly get in terms of how you want to play.. you can do the main story, side missions, just explore... etc etc etc..

everything is up to you,, you're not banged over the head about doing anything at all... So j-rpg fans will probably be like,,, na..

It's feels bigger then Shadows of Middle earth.. Much much bigger then Batman, although set up very similiar to Batman Arkham Knights in terms of how the story works.... you're given no real direction once you leave your starter island, it's like,, ok,, do whatever you want, and come back when you're ready to advance the main mission or any of the side missions..

The Combat isn't nearly as good as Batman or Shadows of War. those games have flat out fun combat.. This game's combat is kinda crap and in all honesty even on easy you'll feel like you're a wet noodle going against Ares the God of War...

After you get decent gear, and decent amounts points you'll be like... alright it's not that bad..

Nope. AC ODyssey is totally different. It is very easy and forgiving, you can finish whole game by just randomly clicking the left mouse button.

And the whole point of being, you know, assassin, is that you can stealth kill 99% of enemies. There is no actualy reason for you to be in combat constantly. Only couple of boss fights and story-based fights force you to do melee-only.

+1 to that

but still good game (never before play AC) but would like to see harder to get lvl up and enemys.

second

would be a great game if there was no this map icons all over when u dont even know or see any of that. Did try, and play now in map with no icons only historic ones, but u still have in compas all the locations...

would be great if there was an option to explore sites and things only with eagle with limited range!

That would make this game great for me...now is preaty good still ( must say buy it on discount for 45e ultimate ed., and that is the right price for the game if not more in it, what i said above..)
unbiased rewiew:
the good
-its not bad game
-its quite fun
-world looks pretty
-lots of things are well fleshout
-World is big and dont feel as empty as past assasin creed games(subjective)

The neutral:
-Fighting feels odd compared to erlier games
-Its a bit grindy when comes to some things
-NPC's feel more dead (while neutral npc's feel alive , guards/officers/heroes/things you fight feel more dead , they all just sit in 1 spot and roam around , patrols are rare and scarse)

The ugly
-Microtransactions , time savers , pay for "ingame loot" with real money , pay for recources with money , list is long
-Fighting feels worse , despite game is "action not stealth game anymore" there is same amount of enemies , in shadow of mordor you could be easily fighting 20+ enemies at once , here you will be fighting 4 at most usualy , maybe more if its "fortress"
-Game has idienty crysis , it wants to be assasin game and sabotages lots of its own things becoming "lesser game" , action part seams the worst part as i wish there would be more stuff you fight , world seams "very empty when comes to enemies" (i really wish there could be atleast twice more enemies)

Mixed feelings

I can give better example , black flag was where they went very far with pirate stuff/action for the better and game still felt like its both

here game feels like 75% assasin creed and 40% action game ,not bad game but sort of lackluster

Verdict:
-There are not many games in ancient greece , and only one im aware whos open world
-Get it on 50% sale

Well, though I'll admit the parry timing is insanely generous (except with some fast enemies) , that's still a massive overstatement.
Ottomic Sep 5, 2019 @ 3:06pm
I personally have played both Mordor games and ended up quite fed up with the incessant amount of enemies and how relentless the nemesis system ended up being (particularly in War). Odyssey is slower paced and much more forgiving.

Regarding time savers, to me they may as well not exist because i can't even fathom the circumstance where i would pay money to play less of a game.
