There's not much to do, really. When somebody starts to attack you, they help in the fight. Some other things I've learned, though....
  • Animals that have been tamed can't be re-tamed so you can't steal pets from enemies.
  • Pets will not blow your cover - which can be pretty silly at times. (Hmmm, what's that alpha bear doing over there by that bush right in the middle of our fortress? Oh well, live and let live.)
  • Wolves really can't do much. The rest do well, though.
  • Pets can get fairly suicidal in really steep terrain. I'm afraid some of your most robust pets will leap to their deaths.
  • If you don't want your pet to fight, you need to run fast and far. Once you get far enough away, they will teleport toward you. However, they will still be hostile so keep running!
  • In quests, taming a critter you're supposed to kill will usually finish the quest. Same for one of the achievements. In the others, you won't be able to tame the critter at all.
  • Most pets follow along just fine if you jump on your horse. Bears are the exception. They like to wander out in front of your horse from time to time! They can also be a pain when trying to call your ship if they stand right where the prompt is.
  • If you release a pet, it will try to wander off. If it can't wander off, it will eventually turn hostile and attack you.
  • You can't tame boars. I doubt you could tame sharks, either, though I never actually tried it.
