how do u throw a grenade

in the tutorial u pick it off the ground and just toss it... but in the game if u have one in your inventory how do u use it?

You simply use grenades like any other usable item in your inventory. After selecting the grenade, you will be able to aim your throw with the directional keys.

Be careful when throwing grenades around crates and corners.

So do u have to press I first pick it and then press f? Or do u assign it to a slot?

Yes, you'd open your inventory, move the cursor over the item, and hit "enter" to use it (same as with a medkit or multi-tool). Except with grenades, it will display the targeting interface for where you want to throw the grenade. Grenades are not assigned to weapon slots; they are consumable items like medkits, mod packs, and multi-tools.
