i don't recall ever staying at an inn / sleeping to save. i've played for hours and quit in the middle of the field, losing no progress - i figured it was just a persistent autosave.
i do always end up back at my home, where i placed my bed and set my spawn point.
there have been a lot of early tutorial changes after i started the game and one time i had gone back to the starter island for fun - this reset my spawn point and every time i'd log in i was back at the mines. i just had to reset to my home spawn bed to fix it, but never lost any progress on a quit > really quit
That doesn't mean you lost progress. Everything else is saved. There's a tutorial pop up that lets you know that you need to sleep at an inn to change your spawn location.
We've considered adding another save point once you leave Castaway Rock (on the beach next to Tammy). Or even spawning players at the nearest acceptable anchor shrine from where they logged out.
The problem with saving the player's location at all times is that we have locations in the game where we don't want the player to return to on a relog, like inside of a boss chamber for example. We also don't save the state of resources in the world, so if you relogged next to a rare resource, you could harvest it over and over and over again, resulting in very cheesable situations.
There are also tricks we use when loading the world to keep things more performant and spawning in outside of an inn can easily break that and result in longer load times among other loading issues. Like loading into an area that gets loaded in via an event, resulting you falling into the void and dying.
