question about combat
ive had my eye on the game for a long time and it looks really cool, and i was considering picking it up for the new update, but i wanted to know with the blocking/parrying, is that something you can only do with a shield, or can you do them with the two-handed swords?

you can only block/parry with shields for now. I know there will be weapon abilities in the future, I can't 100% confirm if that would also include the ability to block strikes with swords (but I don't see why not)

i hope they do add them at some point, i love the sekiro playstyle of blocking/parrying with a two-handed sword, and i hope that since Valheim lets you block/parry with any weapon, that it comes to other survival games

Except what blocking does is "reduce" damage so instead of eating 11 HP damage you will take lets say 8 HP damage. Parrying occures when doing a timed block ( just before the attack will hit you ) nullifying the damage to 0. Why would you parry though? It is WAY WAY easier to move around / dodge ( since there is no stamina limit! ) and avoid damage that way. Plus you can dual wield one handed weapons for massive DPS.

If they want to make shields viable options they need to do 1 of the 4 :

1. Parrying staggers / stuns enemy for 1-2 seconds allowing the player to punish the enemy for lets say 40% extra damage.

2. Shields have their stamina bar but now BLOCK 100% of the damage. That means that you can tank damage but if you hold it for too long you will break your block.

3. Introduce Skills for shields ( Shield bash ( stun etc. ), Magic / Arrow parry, Shield toss ( short ranged attack that staggers enemy ) etc. )

4. Introduce passive damage resistance aura ( lets say 15 % damage reduction when shield is equipped ).

Or take 2-3 and make shields great again.

Right now its pointless do go with a shield which is a shame as I usually play as a tank with a mace in games. Maybe Fall update ( if they even make it according to a roadmap ) will introduce combat rework.

now that the big combat and skills overhaul just hit, anyone know if this is a thing you can do now?

Haven't had a chance to really drill into the mechanics proper, but since just before this class overhaul, shields would block 100% if up and it's not an AOE attack/ no stamina resource to worry about/ if you block just before, you parry to do damage directly with the shields damage stat/ while blocking, you can shield bash with the other attack key( i.e. block with the right hand, and left attack button will bash).

It's possible some of this may have changes slightly with the new update, but I am going to assume it will remain unchanged mechanically for the time being.

I just started the game to see the new update. At least for me to use a sword is no longer viable. Sword attacks almost never scored a critical hit. Also, I do more damage using a shield to hit an enemy than a sword. And I use the same sword and shield from one collection and the same refinement in both cases.

That's a fair observation. Just keep in mind the weapons were rebalanced in this update with the skill tree system in mind, which is coming soon. The skill trees will add a lot of functionality and power to weapons.

For example, the developers streamed awhile ago them building the mystic skill tree and were developing passives which added buffs and bonus healing with using healing spells and order magic weapons
