Save always reverts to Castle

I am playing with my daughter and we love it! WE play in small chunks though as she is young...
So we got first scarf in castle, then went through the doors.. Always when we restart the game despite collecting more scarves and going past what I believe are save points, we always start back in the castle - any ideas?

You will always start back in the castle when loading a game. You can use the waystones and travel between the ones you've collected to move faster through a world.
