The algae rollover panel's metabolism tab shows what the algae consumes and produces. If you reduce the overall amount of nutrients or Co2 that is in the water below what the algae needs to consume then it's growth will stop and it will reduce in quantity. However this will also harm whatever plants are in your aquarium too.
That is not a great situation to have to subject your aquarium to. We'll add a dissolvable pill into the game this coming Friday that will act as an algae killer and reduce algae to a more manageable quantity.
I can also try see if I can squeeze in a new "algae eating" fish behaviour for Friday's update too. The tetras, platies and guppies do actually eat algae in real life and they should also do so in the game. It will be a more natural way to control algae.
