stuck in the orangery!

I've read many walkthroughs and cannot find how to advance passed this part.

I went to the museum for the first time. Met the director. Looked at the daggers. Took the extinguisher. Then I went into the orangery. After looking at the objects inside, I tried to leave but I can't. The PC just says, "Hmmm. This would not be clever."

Based on what I've read, the vase & soil puzzle doesn't occur until later in the story. Am I missing something here? Walkthroughs and in-game hints are no help thus far.

I just ended up starting the game over and following a walkthrough to the letter to ensure that bug didn't occur again. Ahh the fun of playing old ass games!

I actually had to go back and forth a few times until i figured out the right vase/dirt combination. (I think is random)

I realize I'm 3 years too late to this party but you couldn't leave because you had the vase in your inventory. She doesn't want to walk out of the orangery with it. You're supposed to put the vase back where you found it.
