can anybody help??
Also, have you tried playing with the controller? Because, if you can successfully play with the controller, then it would rule out the possibility of the controller hardware being the issue. I'd then quit out, disconnect the controller and boot up the game again to see if it is the KB+M set up. If there are no problems with either, then it would lead me to believe that it would have to do with either: a) having KB+M over connected joystick is a general problem, or b) it could be specific to the PS4 controller and how it works in either I) the game or II) the steam interface which I am assuming you use to map the controller.
I hope this helps any :)

I use Notepad++ to edit all my stuff
It's weird using X to go back and ▢ to select on the main menu.
try playing around with X-Y-Z AXIS sensitivity, and remap all controls to:
X - Button 1 - Thrust (Can also use R2)
O - Button 2 - Brake (Can also use L2)
▢ - Button 3 - Boost
△ - Button 4 - Repair
L1 - Button 5 - Slide
R1 - Button 6 - Taunt/Flamejet
DPad Up - Hat Up - Cycle camera
DPad Down - Hat Down - Look Back
DPad L - Hat Left - Roll left (Can also use Right Stick L)
DPad R - Hat Right - Roll right (Can also use Right Stick R)
Lmk if this helps
Me personally have re-assigned every button on my x-box controller and it plays like a charm. I use left-stick for steering left and right, the rightstick can tilt the vehicle, and the triggers for acceleration and breaking. The rest you can assign to whatever you prefer, but this should be the basics for your setup.
For example i have booster under my left stick when pressed upward, and i placed slide under my right stick when pressed downward, works really well.
