Yes, the original PC version did have split screen....
This is the original PC version, it never had splitscreen.
Only the N64 version had splitscreen, the PC never did because this simply doesn't make any sense. Why would you be playing on the same monitor on a PC?
In the same way you will be playing on a small TV back then.
I mean, a lot people played the N64 version running at a miserable 320x240 resolution in a 20" TV and a poor framerate back in the day. I think playing with 2 players in a monitor with way higher resolution and better framerate is perfectably tolerable.
It technically has multiplayer, though only through LAN. So no 'open' multiplayer per se, but there's programs you can get to connect to servers and have it treated as a LAN, so you can still race against your friends online.
The PC version never had splitscreen. You either played over LAN or a console version.
Dude, why are you know better what I did? I even asked my cousin for confirmation, and he confirmed that we played on PC. And I can remember his mother created a CD copy from the game for me.
If you can not trust me probably yes. At least try go collect some reference, if you so confident about it... Because for me it looks like you never played this game and just heard some legends about splitscreen is not supported in windows back in time.
A quick search will show you that any PC version of this game, original or Steam/GOG, doesn't have splitscreen.
I played the original PC and N64 version back in the day,
Sorry to disappoint you but I remember correctly, especially because neither me or my cosine never had console. I talked with my cosine again about this topic, looks like they still have the mentioned old PC, so when we have time we will try to revive it, and if we succeed we can create a video to prove our standpoint.
