TROUBLESHOOTING

Game Crashes on Startup
The game can be really finnicky about USB devices, especially wireless headsets (in my case), try unplugging various devices and see if the game will boot without them plugged in.

Also try this:
Originally posted by Ragnarok:
From what I have found, the game is recognizing wireless headset fobs/dongles/usbs as controllers, causing the game to crash or causing the game not to recognize the actual controller. Simply unplug those receivers, and configure the game to launch in Win7 compatibility.

No Sound
If your game doesn't have sound and says it doesn't "detect your soundcard," try this:

The method that worked for me. Go to "data" folder in Star Wars Episode I Racer. Then open config ---> current --> audio. Change the setting in "audio" to "ON". All the sounds in the game immediately appeared.

Controller doesn't work
This can be a whole slew of problems from specific controllers to which USB port you're using, but you can also give this a try:

Camera is stuck looking behind you
This happens rarely but is easily fixed by pressing the Tab key once you see it happen.

Windowed Mode?
You can run the game Windowed, but only with an external program:

Hey Everyone, so me and @Renegawd have found a way to play SWE1R in windowed mode for GOG users.

Things you need:

Voodoo
Download: http://dege.freeweb.hu/dgVoodoo2/dgVoodoo2_55_4.zip ( Automatically downloads )

GOG users:

1. Once downloaded, Make a folder on your desktop and Name it Voodoo.

2. Extract all files from the Winrar or 7Zip to the voodoo folder.

3. Then go to Computer > Program Files (x86) > GOG Galaxy > Games > STAR WARS Racer

4. Open the voodoo folder, Extract dgVoodooCpl.exe to STAR WARS Racer then open the folder nammed ( MS ), Extract D3D8.dll, D3DImm.dll, DDraw.dll to the STAR WARS Racer folder. It's going to ask if you want to replace them click Yes.

5. Then right click ( Extract dgVoodooCpl.exe ) and run it as Administrator.

Then from here ill show you my settings and copy them.

DgVoodoo is included in the steam version I think so just copy the settings you see in the pictures

Physics issues with higher frame rates
Due to the way physics are handled in the game, the higher your frame rate the less responsive the Slide (drifting) mechanic becomes and the Zero-G tubes on the Oovoo IV maps restrain your movement a lot. I believe the game was meant to run at 30 frames, but 60 is ok, going above 60 and the Slide basically won't do anything and you'll be stuck in the middle of the tubes, at the mercy of the asteroids. However, you can use RivaTuner (bundled with MSI Afterburner) to set up a profile to limit the frame rate of the game to whatever you want. Some players even limit the frame rate lower than 30 to have better controls on the slide and tubes.

FAQS

What is this release, is it updated?
Yes and no, this is basically the same release as 20 years ago but it has a wrapper on it so it can run on modern systems and support widescreen. This isn't ideal in the least, but at least we have the game for now.

What inputs are supported? What's best?
Keyboard, Mouse, Xinput and Direct Input. Xinput is for standardized Xbox controllers and the like, and Direct Input is for HOTAS set-ups (flight sticks). I use a HOTAS and it's incredible. Most world records are set with a Keyboard set-up, some on a flight stick. I personally can't recommend using the Mouse though, it just feels incredibly awkward.

Is there Online?
Not natively; the game was only meant to run multiplayer on LAN connections, however, in this day and age you can have a Virtual LAN program like Hamachi to connect with others and it will allow you to play online. Also, since the Steam, GOG and original PC releases are all the same all versions can play with each other.

How many players are supported in multiplayer?
Officially the game supports 8, but we've had up to 10 people in an online race so we're not sure how many can actually play. Possibly 12 since there has to be 12 starting line spawn points on the tracks for singleplayer.

Can you Mod the Game?
Yes but you have to be incredibly talented at reverse engineering; JayFoxRox spearheaded an Open Source reverse engineering project for the game called SW1ER. He managed to create a patcher that will update the launch .exe of the game and replace the fonts with HD fonts, make it so Pods can't blow up on each other in Multiplayer and give all Pods maxed out stats in multiplayer.

Dual Stick N64 set-up?
No. This was a novel control set-up just for the N64 version of the game that required a code, it allowed you to control the thrust on both engines individually. JayFoxRox did find some control scheme files that reference this but no way has been found as to how to activate it or if it would even work.

Is there Splitscreen?
No, that was for console only and there doesn't seem to be anyway to activate it on the PC version. It probably doesn't exist on PC.

Is there a Speedrunning Community for this? A Discord?
Yes and yes! We're a small community but we're dedicated and we host mulitplayer races every Saturday, come join us:
https://discord.gg/PEYCCC4

We have a variety of players from casuals, streamers, tryhards, speed runners and people who pick the worst characters to see how they do.

My 360 controller absolutely won't work, and the game acts as if it's not even connected when it is. Don't have this problem with any other game. Ideas?

When you go into the Joystick Settings in the Settings menu, do you have Joystick Enabled?

Hey, Currently having some trouble myself and I don't know why. I can't get anything to launch even if I unplug all of my USB devices. I'm thinking it might be a problem with my resolution but none of the config files even have that as an item on the list. Any suggestions?

EDIT: If system specs are required for anyone to better help me, I am prepared to provide them, just let me know. I haven't played this game on PC in like... 12 years or so? I had to resort to the N64 version, which is vastly inferior.

What resolution do you have set when you run the Configurator Tool?

For some reason when I first launched the game on Steam, I wasn't able to select 1080p but the game still ran. It was only after that first boot I was able to set it to 1080p in the Configurator tool.

I have this problem, as well. Clicking "Enable Joystick" just shows the message "No Joystick Found."

This might be an issue the game has with USB/HID devices, another member of our community said he had issues with fan or pump he had connected directly to his motherboard. I would try and troubleshoot by only having your controller plugged in before you launch the game.

What happens when you plug the controller in after you launch the game?

I unplugged extra USB devices, even rebooted the computer a few times, but the game will not recognize my official wired 360 controller.

I did find a workaround for myself using DS4Windows and connecting my PS4 controller via Bluetooth. The controller is recognized and all is well.

I'm skeptical about using 3rd party programs, but this[pcgamingwiki.com] may help someone with the controller issue.

It was bugging me so I played around a little bit. Go into Steam->Settings->Controller->General Controller Settings and turn off "Xbox Configuration Support." The 360 controller should now work in-game as intended.

Gonna put this in the OP.

What type of audio device are you using? I'd also check if there's any updates to your audio drivers. I haven't dealt much in the way of audio issues so I'm not sure the best method to troubleshoot and sort those out.

Is there anything for getting the Steam overlay to work? I've tried various settings in dgvoodoo and even uninstalling. Geforce and rivatuner work just fine though...
Sire Nov 19, 2018 @ 10:44am
I haven't tried dgVoodoo, but the overlay works for me natively. Maybe dgVoodoo causes issue with Steam?

I got dgvoodoo because I thought it might help get the overlay working. :aersad:

@Sire
Thank you for the information.

I had not known until the last year or so, that there was a PC version of this game. Ever since, I've been wondering whether it could be played with two throttles or flightsticks. Two thumbsticks, might even be good enough.
